NILES -- Ashland swept the Penguins, 3-2 and 8-5, Sunday at Eastwood Field.
Justin Banks had three hits on the day, including his third homer of the season, while Tommy Nutt was 2-for-3 in game two.
Eric Shaffer did not allow an earned run but took the loss in game one as he was charged with all three of Ashland's unearned runs in eight innings. Lucas Engle suffered his first loss in game two as he allowed five runs (three earned) in 51/3 innings.
YSU swept Ashland on Saturday, 9-5 and 9-6. Dustin Thomas, Jim Phillips and J.D. Hannan had five hits each for the Penguins.
YSU is 18-15 following the weekend, while Ashland is 23-13.
The Penguins play host to Toledo Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
Softball
CANFIELD -- Wisconsin-Green Bay's Katie Groshek hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Phoenix (12-13, 5-3 Horizon League) past Youngstown State (16-25, 2-9 Horizon League), 5-4, Sunday at McCune Park.
McKenzie Bedra hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Penguins a 4-3 lead.
YSU other's run came in the first, when Tiffany Patteson led off with a triple, the 14th of her career and a new school record, and scored on Lacy Bronson's sacrifice fly.
YSU travels to Cleveland Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Women's tennis
YOUNGSTOWN -- Seniors Heathe Hagood and Karen Najbert helped Youngstown State defeat Butler 4-3 Sunday.
Najbert and Hagood won singles matches as the Penguins (12-8) finished 5-1 in the Horizon League will be the No. 2 seed for the league Championships, which start Saturday in Indianapolis.
Najbert won 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 over Alaine Griffin and Hagood won 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) over Michelle Howes.
Also for YSU, Nicole Muzechuk defeated Kaitlin Elliott 6-4, 6-4 and Emily Thayer beat Chelsey Casperson 6-2, 6-3.
Butler's Tayo Bailey defeated Whitney Thomas 6-1, 6-0 and the Bulldogs' Shaden Dowiatt defeated Gina Peretti 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, YSU's Peretti and Najbert won 8-6 over Griffin and Hawes, while Butler won the other two matches.
Men's tennis
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State (8-9) lost to Butler 7-0 Sunday. Butler (13-12) has won six of the last seven conference tournament titles.
In singles, YSU's Tom Barth lost to James Low 7-5, 6-2; Brian Meek lost to Parker Ross 6-2, 6-4; Scott Kathery lost to Evan West 6-0, 6-2; Ryan Trapp lost to Mike Weaver 6-4, 6-4; Jason Trapp lost to Tony Aker 6-1, 6-1, and Zach Landgraf lost to Adam Bordow 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Butler's Low and Andy Bartish beat Meek and Kathery 8-4, Aker and Ross beat the Trapp brothers, 9-8 (10-8), and Weaver and Scott Newmark defeated Barth and Landgrat 8-4 at No. 3.
Women's golf
SALEM -- YSU freshman Brittany Jones grabbed a one-stroke lead at the conclusion of the first round of the Spring Invitational Sunday at Salem Hills Golf Club.
Jones, who finished with a 78, had two birdies and shot a 38 on the back nine.
Felicia Ciotola is in fourth place after firing a 37 for the day's low nine and finishing 18 holes with an 80. Cleveland State's Kristen Obush and Butler's Joni Reynolds are tied for second at 79.
Butler holds the team lead (325), with YSU in second (335), Cleveland State in third (341), IPFW in fourth (352) and Walsh in fifth (359).
Also for YSU, Gina Abruzzino shot 85 for 11th pace, Bonnie Sherman and Kristen Albrecht each shot an 86 to tie for 15th, and Mallory Wyderka shot an 88 and is tied for 20th.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will start at 10 a.m. today at Salem Hills.

Boxing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Registration continues for the KO Drugs High School Boxing Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.
Signups will be taken from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dick's Sporting Goods in Boardman, and Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dick's Sporting Goods in Niles.
The tournament will start May 3 at the St. Nicholas' Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road.
