PREP SOFTBALL Boardman topples Lima Bath in nine

The Spartans scored the winning run on two wild pitches in the ninth.
ASHLAND -- It took Boardman nine innings, but the Spartans finally outlasted Lima Bath 5-4 in the Wendy's Spring Classic Tournament Friday afternoon.
The Spartans (7-5) trailed 3-0 going to the seventh inning, but rallied to tie the contest and extend the game.
Nicole Williams and Katie Zetts opened the seventh with singles and then Holly Holman doubled home one run and Addie Carothers hit a triple to tie up the contest.
In the ninth the game was under the International Tiebreaker rule and Boardman started the inning with Jaclyn Cunningham on second base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on another wild pitch.
Boardman's Ashley DiDomenico, who pitched all nine innings, shut Lima Bath down in order in the ninth to record her fifth win. She struck out nine batters.
She also had two hits along with Mallory Hay and Holman.
Poland 3, Howland 1
HOWLAND -- Howland High's bid to stop Poland's winning streak was on target for three innings, but the Bulldogs battled back and kept the streak alive.
Kristy Hertz (6-0) worked five innings for the Bulldogs (11-0, 4-0 Metro Athletic Conference) struck out nine and walked two to pick up the win.
Ciera Urichich's two-run double in the fourth put the Bulldogs ahead.
The Tigers (6-3, 2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Urichich also hit a single to lead the Bulldogs 8-hit attack.
Fitch 7, Warren Harding 0
AUSTINTOWN -- Jen Purnell allowed just two hits and struck out 14 for the Falcons (4-2).
Nicole Smaldino hit a triple and a single for Fitch, while Staci Balkan and Andrea Lucente had two singles each. Lucente had three RBIs.
Ursuline 3, Parma Padua 1
TOLEDO -- Maureen Cearfoss pitched a complete-game two-hitter and went 3-for-3 to lead the Irish (7-3) in the first game of the St. Ursula Invitational.
Cearfoss (7-3) struck out nine batters, and her triple in the third inning drove in the go-ahead run for Ursuline. Megan Saccomen had an RBI double in the second inning to tie the score at 1-all. Jolanta Carkido added two hits for the Irish.
Kim Weindel doubled in Padua's (7-3) run in the first inning.
Mooney 12, Beaver Local 1
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mara Palombaro had two hits, including a triple, scored twice and had three RBIs for Mooney (7-4), which scored seven runs in the first inning.
Alexa Smith had three hits and an RBI for Beaver Local (3-9).
Mathews 6, Bristol 1
VIENNA -- Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Youngs, who struck out 22 batters in a 12-inning game in her last outing, added 17 Friday as Mathews topped Bristol 6-1.
She scattered three hits in recording her fourth decision in six outings. Youngs also hit a double and two singles, drove in a run and scored twice.
McKenzie Brown chipped in with three hits and drove in two runs.
The Mustangs (6-4, 4-1 in the Northeast Suburban League) got a pair of singles from Sue McAleer and Terri Turney.
Champion 6, Liberty 5
CHAMPION -- Emily Hayes homered and doubled for Champion, which scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Liberty 6-5 in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Karr (6-0) had two hits and pitched two innings of relief for the Flashes (11-1, 4-0). Alyshia Brink also had two hits.
Ashley Gore and Sarah Stosko each had two hits for Liberty (1-7, 1-5).
Lakeview 7, Girard 1
CORTLAND -- Lindsay Whetzel pitched a complete game one-hitter, striking out seven and walking three for Lakeview (5-4, 1-1) in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Whetzel and her twin sister Lauren Whetzel hit back-to-back triples for the Bulldogs. Amy Downs had two hits and three RBIs and Brittney Bucco had two hits.
Girard is 3-9, 1-4.
South Range 12, Chaney 5
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Raiders (3-7) built a 9-4 lead and went on to beat the Cowboys.
Skye Walley (3-7) pitched a complete game for the win. Heather Stacy of the Raiders hit a home run, double, single, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Casey Knopp added three singles and drove in two runs.
Monica Miller hit a double and single and Cheila Kollar hit a pair of singles and drove in three runs.
