Warden resigns amid problems

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County jail warden has resigned.
The county prison board, at its meeting Wednesday, accepted the resignation of Mark Fellows, effective immediately.
Meanwhile, the board appointed deputy warden Mark Schaas as acting warden until a new warden is hired. The board plans to advertise the warden's post as soon as possible, county officials said.
Lawrence County Commissioner Ed Fosnaught, a member of the prison board, agreed to serve as liaison between the prison board and the jail, which is in New Castle. He is to keep the prison board informed about problems arising at the jail.
County officials said Fellows' resignation was presented to the prison board in the midst of ongoing problems at the jail, but they would not elaborate.
Neither Fellows nor Schaas was available to comment Wednesday or Thursday.
