PREP BASEBALL Gruver helps Fitch to 8-3 win

Struthers, Niles and Salem won non-league contests.
AUSTINTOWN -- Freshman pitcher Steve Gruver (1-0) worked five innings and struck out eight Thursday as the Fitch High baseball team upended Canton McKinley 8-3 in a Federal League game.
The Falcons (8-2, 3-0) share the league lead with North Canton Hoover. McKinley slipped to 3-4, 1-3.
Fitch, which won for the sixth straight time, took the lead 4-3 for keeps in the bottom of the third inning as it scored twice.
Mike Brown hit a pair of singles and drove in two runs for the Falcons. Joe Burnich added a pair of singles, scored twice and stole a base.
Massillon Perry 4, Boardman 2
BOARDMAN -- Armani Johnson had two hits, including a double, and Chris Tremblay had a double for the Spartans (5-6, 1-3 Federal).
Mike Graber had a double for Perry (4-2, 1-2).
Struthers 11, Springfield 4
STRUTHERS -- The Wildcats (2-8) scored five runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Chris Kadvan (1-0) hit a double and triple. He also drove in two runs and scored twice.
Adam Lantier added a triple, single, drove in a run and scored twice while Mike Duponty hit a pair of singles, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Kadvan struck out six as he pitched a complete game to pick up the win.
Niles 11, Lakeview 1
CORTLAND -- Anthony Ragozine pitched a two-hitter and also helped his own cause with two hits.
Robbie Porter added two hits, one a double and drove in three runs while Mike Ruscitti, Matt Vince and Brandon Miller all had two hits for the Dragons (8-3).
Salem 13, Liberty 1
LIBERTY -- Bryan Wright tossed a five-inning one-hitter, striking out eight batters for the Quakers (6-4).
Jarin Heath's three hits included a home run and double as he drove in three runs. Ben Miller also had three hits and three RBIs.
For Liberty (4-5), Sam Barker singled and scored.
West Branch 7, Marlington 5
ALLIANCE -- Steve McNeely had three hits and John Wallace and Marc Possage each added two to lead West Branch.
Possage limited Marlington to just one run through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh before Matt Catania came on to put out the five.
Marlington score four of its five runs in the seventh.
Both teams are 5-4.
McDonald 15, Bloomfield 3
McDONALD -- Paul Logar's three hits included a double. He scored two runs and drove in one run.
Also for the Blue Devils (6-3), Jordan Farr had two hits.
Late Wednesday
United scored two hits in the bottom of the seventh to beat East Palestine 4-3.
Nick Grier had a home run for the Eagles, while Aaron Barnhouse and Zack Dunn homered for the Bulldogs (0-8).
