MAHONING COUNTY Overturned boat's occupants found safe

Authorities are not sure what caused the boat to tip over.
NORTH LIMA -- The occupants of a fishing boat found overturned on a Beaver Township lake Sunday stepped forward Monday, a bit embarrassed after learning that divers spent hours looking for them.
Lt. Rick Martin, a detective for the Beaver Township Police Department, said two young men, 19 and 20, contacted police after reading news reports that the Mahoning County Dive Team had been looking for the occupants of a fishing boat found in a quarry lake Sunday afternoon.
A resident of the area contacted police on Sunday, saying that an aluminum boat was floating upside down in the lake, along with a fishing pole and a jacket. The lake, which covers about five acres, doesn't attract a lot of people, Martin said, and no one in the area recalled seeing anyone around the boat.
Martin said he was not sure what caused the boat to tip over. The boys, who were not identified, swam to shore and tried to find help. When they didn't find anyone, they left the area.
"They were really cold and didn't want to try to go back in the lake," Martin said.
Even though the incident caused a panic, Martin said the boys probably did the right thing.
"I wouldn't think they should risk going back out for it," Martin said. "We're just happy they're alive."
