The Irish scored early, then rode the arm of pitcher Josh Tedesco.
STRUTHERS -- Ursuline coach Sean Durkin was happy to look at the schedule and see Cardinal Mooney as the next opponent following his team's disappointing 10-1 loss to Warren Harding on Tuesday.
"I don't have to do much to get the team up for a Mooney game," Durkin said. "It's always a big game with a great atmosphere when we play our rival."
The Irish (5-1, 1-1) bounced back from its poor outing by putting five runs on the scoreboard in the first two innings and then riding the arm of senior pitcher Josh Tedesco for a 9-5 Steel Valley Conference win.
Struck out 11
Tedesco pitched six solid innings while striking out 11 Mooney batters to pick up the win.
"Josh's pitching was the story of the game," Durkin said. "He got us out of a lot of situations that he didn't put us in by making big pitch after big pitch.
"He was outstanding tonight."
The left-hander had full command of all his pitches as he kept the Mooney hitters off stride all night. Tedesco only allowed four hits in six innings and he stranded nine Mooney runners on the basepaths.
Senior Justin Markota relieved Tedesco in the seventh to help squash a late Mooney rally.
"We didn't hit a lot of balls hard tonight," Mooney coach Steve Leslie said. "Tedesco did a good job tonight of keeping us off balance. He pitched a great ball game."
Leading the way
It was the top of the Ursuline batting order that did most of the damage offensively for the Irish.
Senior Sean Satterlee went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored twice, while his brother Ryan Satterlee scored three times.
Sophomore Eddie Rohan also had two hits and an RBI while scoring two more runs for the Irish. Designated hitter Andy Kopper also drove in two runs.
"We got a lot of timely hits tonight," Durkin said. "But the real key was our aggressiveness on the basepaths."
Ursuline runners stole six bases and forced errant throws by Mooney's defense because of the aggressive base running.

Ursuline scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning against Mooney ace Joe Irwin.
"You can't spot a good team like Ursuline five runs and expect to win," Leslie said. "I'm disappointed tonight but we just have to continue to get better."
Ursuline tallied two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Sean Satterlee and on a fielder's choice by Kopper.
In the sixth, strong base running enabled the Satterlee brothers to each score a run and put the game away.
Mooney (4-2, 0-1) got two hits from Jon Grist while Pat Kohowski drove in two runs with a fielder's choice and a bases-loaded walk.
Dom Daltorio's pinch-hit single drove in two runs in the top of the seventh to close a seven-run deficit to 9-5.
