LISBON -- Dr. Patricia Vigder, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Salem Community Hospital, will be the guest speaker for a breast cancer awareness program from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Columbiana County Career Center.
The event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society of Eastern Ohio, the East Liverpool Breast Cancer Support Group and Salem Community and East Liverpool City hospitals.
The program will also include dinner, auctions, and a fashion show featuring Columbiana County residents who are breast cancer survivors, said Al Stabilito, director of communications for the eastern Ohio ACS.
Stabilito said Dr. Vigder will speak on "Preventing Breast Cancer Through Healthy Living."
Fashion Bug of Salem and Calcutta, Catos of Salem and James Locke and Kings Jewelers are providing fashions and accessories.
Stabilito said October is the American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and its pink ribbon campaign. People wear a pink ribbon during the month to honor breast cancer survivors, to remember those lost to the disease and to support the search for a cure, he said.
Stabilito said breast cancer is the second-most-common form of cancer in women, with skin cancer being the first; and it's the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, with lung cancer being first.
Statistics
Stabilito said according to American Cancer Society statistics, there are about 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer.
He said about 216,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2004. About 40,110 women will die from the disease this year.
Stabilito said there is no charge for the career center event, and both women and men are invited to attend. Space is limited, however, so registration is required.
