Hoch, Oyler lift Eagles to Hubbard Classic title
Salem finished third in the eight-team tournament.
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard High volleyball team won three matches, including a three-set final over Strongsville, to place first in the eight-team Hubbard Classic on Saturday for just the second time in eight years.
"We're small, but we're pesky," said Hubbard coach Chuck Montgomery, who also won the tournament two years ago. "We're like gnats. That's how we play."
Kylene Hoch and Callie Oyler made the all-tournament team for the Eagles (10-3).
"I'm surprised, but we just fought very, very hard today," Montgomery said. "That was the difference. We played good defense and did a lot of the little things. The girls played hard and they deserved it."
The Eagles defeated Southeast in the opening round, then defeated Salem in two sets to advance to the final. The Quakers finished third, defeating Columbus Bishop Hartley in the third place match. Salem senior Sarah Hamilton also made the all-tournament team.
Boardman's April Melquist also earned all-tournament honors as the Spartans placed sixth.
