I-680 to temporarily close
YOUNGSTOWN -- A portion of Interstate 680 northbound will be closed from midnight tonight to 6 a.m. Wednesday as part of a project to upgrade and replace overhead signs and supports. Motorists will be able to detour onto the Glenwood and Mahoning Avenue exit ramp, cross Edwards Street and return to I-680 via the northbound entrance ramp at that location.
New Habitat home
YOUNGSTOWN -- A groundbreaking ceremony was to be at 10 a.m. today at 1946 Atkinson Ave. for the Mahoning Valley's 17th new Habitat for Humanity home. Ohio Edison is sponsoring this single-family home on the city's East Side as part of a $260,000 grant to the local Habitat affiliate. Work on this house will be done by inmates of the Federal Correctional Institution at Elkton, representatives of Youngstown State University and local trade union apprentice plumbing, heating and electrical workers.
Ursuline High vandalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone used red and yellow spray paint to write vulgarities on old stone, brick veneer, sidewalks, metal window panels and metal entrance doors at Ursuline High School, police said. The writings were directed at the Ursuline-Cardinal Mooney football game played Saturday. The vandalism was discovered Monday.
More traffic charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gregory Jackson, 45, of McClure Avenue, who police said has 16 driver's license suspensions, was stopped Monday night on the East Side because his car had no front license plate. Police said the rear license plate of Jackson's Oldsmobile is registered to a Ford. Jackson was issued a citation for driving under suspension, fictitious plates and no front plate. The Oldsmobile was impounded pending court action. Municipal court records show that Jackson owes fines and costs on seven cases dating to 1994.
Diabetes Expo 2004
LIBERTY -- Diabetes Expo 2004, presented by Humility of Mary Health Partners Diabetes Education department, is from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive.
The event will feature a panel of physicians and other professionals, including a podiatrist, endocrinologist, nephrologist, cardiologist, ophthalmologist, a diabetes educator and registered dietitian, who will discuss diabetes concerns related to their specialty. The Expo also includes exhibits, lunch and prizes.
Open house at landfill
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Waste Management Inc.'s Mahoning Landfill, state Route 617, will host an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The free community event will feature guided tours of the facility and a complimentary gift bag for each person attending. Refreshments will be served and participants can enter a raffle prize drawing and meet the staff of Waste Management's Mahoning Landfill.

Police seek robbers
HUBBARD -- Township police are asking for the public's help in finding two men who robbed an elderly couple during the weekend.
Detective Mike Begeot said the thieves entered the South Main Street home of a couple in their 80s, tied up the husband and took cash and jewelry Saturday night.
The wife was in another part of the house and wasn't disturbed. Begeot asked that anyone with information to contact police, (330) 534-8477.
School board OKs pact
HUBBARD -- The school board approved a $20,000 contract with the Potential Development Program Inc. at a regular meeting Monday. The purpose is to provide education services to special-needs pupils, paid for by grant funds. The board also accepted a $437 donation from the Hubbard Chamber of Commerce to buy books for teachers at Roosevelt Elementary.
