Man survives jump
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 28-year-old East LaClede Avenue man who jumped from a bridge on the South Side on Sunday morning survived the fall, police said. Police were sent to the bridge at East Dewey Avenue and Erie Street around 10:50 a.m., along with firefighters and an ambulance. A witness told police he was walking east on East Dewey when he saw a man with his head on the rail of the bridge who said, "I'm going to do it," then jumped.
Woman dies in crash
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- A Lowellville woman died and her husband was taken to a hospital after a crash on state Route 317 and State Line Road. Mary Davanzo, 63, was the passenger in a 1987 Cadillac sedan driven by her husband, Anthony, 65, both of Lowellville. Police said Anthony Davanzo failed to stop at an intersection around 7:20 p.m. Saturday and his vehicle was struck by a 1994 Chrysler sedan driven by Samantha Fry, 22, of Edinburg. Anthony Davanzo was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. His condition was not available this morning.
Aggravated robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Johnny Warren, 45, of Plazaview Court walked up to the drive-through of McDonald's at 2525 Market St. about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, ordered four double cheeseburgers and then held his hand under his shirt as if he had a gun, police said. The restaurant manager, who was working the drive-through, quoted Warren as saying, "Don't do anything stupid," and, "Don't be a hero." The manager left the window as if to get the cheeseburgers but called 911 instead. Warren fled but was caught by police and arrested on a charge of attempted aggravated robbery. No weapon was found on him.
Promoting filmmaking
YOUNGSTOWN -- Richard Ouzounian, founder of the Youngstown-Warren film commission, will be the speaker at the next Youngstown Area Entertainment District Association meeting at 6 p.m. July 12 in the auditorium on the second floor of the Ohio One Building downtown. Ouzounian's objective is to bring movie making to Youngstown.
Flag disposal ceremony
POLAND -- The fifth annual flag disposal ceremony sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the post, 35 Cortland St. The public is invited. Worn, frayed, torn or faded American flags will be honorably retired. Flags may be dropped off at the post in the receptacle marked "flag disposal."
Fitch class schedules
AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch High School students may adjust their 2004-05 class schedules from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the school. Students may change only the courses that failed to appear on their course verification form. Students will not be permitted to adjust class times or class sections.
