It sponsors three programs: Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. SHORT-TERM OPPORTUNITIES
Angels for Animals: Volunteers are needed to help with the setting up and tearing down of the organization's booth at the Canfield Fair. The fair runs from Sept. 1-6.
Camp Fire USA: People needed to assist with the children at its day camp from Aug. 9-13.
Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation: Booth sitters are needed at the Canfield Fair.
Forum Health: Assistants are needed to help with the summer challenge camp (CHAMPS), which runs from Monday through Aug. 13.
Girard Multi-Generational Center: People are needed to help serve lunch any second Saturday of a month.
Hospice of the Valley: There will be training for people to become "companion volunteers" to patients and their families. It will be a six-week course from Aug. 4 through Sept. 8 on Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m. at the Boardman campus of St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Men's Garden Club of Youngstown: Help is needed with the club's horticultural shows at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27.
Needle's Eye/Southside Ministries: Tutors are needed for the summer program for children in grades one through four Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. until Aug. 12.
Salvation Army: Volunteers are needed to help with the McSal's Canteen to serve lunch to inner-city children twice a month.
Volunteer Services Agency: Booth sitters are needed for the Canfield Fair.
CAN YOU HELP?
Volunteer help also is needed for these agencies:
AARP/Faith in Action: The group is looking for a responsible lead volunteer to help recruit, manage and recognize other volunteers involved in assisting senior citizens in the Faith in Action program.
American Red Cross Disaster Services: People are needed to assist with activities related to this year's flooding.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters: People 18 and older are needed to become mentors for children ages 7-15. Men are especially needed, and the commitment is for one year.
Camp Fire USA: Volunteers are needed for fund raising, public relations and to serve on the board of directors.
Citizen Corps: People are wanted who are interested in responding to emergencies and disasters in the community. They also can back up first responders, assist the Red Cross disaster and blood services, and help distribute food through Second Harvest Foodbank.
Family Service Center: A person is needed to do light office work a few hours a week.
Northside Citizens Coalition: People and groups or businesses are wanted to paint houses of elderly citizens. The paint has been donated.
Turning Point Counseling Center: Volunteers are needed to do filing work.
Ursuline Education Center: People are needed to greet visitors and give directions.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: Volunteers needed to assist senior citizens by providing grocery shopping, making visits and reassurance calls.
United Way: A person is needed for clerical work.
YWCA: Volunteers are needed to rock babies up to 6 months old and to be aides with the organization's preschool program.
