MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards. This week's standards: Students understand the ways language, art, music, belief systems and other cultural elements may facilitate global understanding. (Social Studies: Global Connections) Students understand the interaction of human beings and their physical environment, the use of land, building of cities, and ecosystem changes in selected locales and regions. (Social Studies: People, Places and the Environment).
Activities:
1. Draw a picture of yourself and your friends having fun on a boat in the waters off Greece. Write a story to go with your picture.
2. Locate the following items in a newspaper and tell how they are related to Greek heritage: (a) a movie that is a comedy, (b) a square and a circle, (c) a story about the U.S. Congress, and (d) an art exhibit or museum.
3. Create a tourism brochure for Greece. Draw pictures showing interesting Greek sites. Write sentences telling people why Greece is an exciting place to visit.
4. Why would each of these people like to visit Greece: a farmer, a sailor, a historian, a geologist, and a chef?
5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about the original Greek Olympics. What events were part of the original games? What events are part of the modern games? What events will be contested for the first time this year?
