Bond set at $150,000 for man accused in shooting

Saturday, July 24, 2004

YOUNGSTOWN -- Bond has been set at $150,000 for Jason Winston, 19, of West Indianola Avenue, who is accused of firing a shot from his bicycle at a South Side couple's car when they stopped at a red light Friday morning.
Municipal Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. ordered that Winston be placed on electronically monitored house arrest if he makes bond.
Atty. Bassil Ally, an assistant city prosecutor, told the judge at Friday's arraignment that Winston fired at the couple's car because he thought they pulled too close to him.
"He's obviously a danger to the community," Ally told the judge.
Winston faces two counts of felonious assault and one each of carrying a concealed weapon and illegal possession of a weapon based on a prior conviction. He was convicted of attempted aggravated trafficking in drugs and placed on two years' probation in February 2003.
Winston will be back in court Aug. 2 for a preliminary hearing.
