Killer wins parole
WARREN -- A former Warren police sergeant, sentenced to prison after he admitted killing his wife, has been granted parole. The state parole board granted Wilburt White's parole Monday over objections from the Trumbull County prosecutor's office and the victim's family.
White will be released after March 15, said Miriam Fife, a victim-witness representative for the county prosecutor. White, 76, was sentenced to prison for 18 years to life Jan. 29, 1991, for the murder of his 54-year-old wife, Luella.
Theft-by-deception charge
CANFIELD -- Clifford H. Adams, 34, was arrested Sunday on Shields Road by a Mahoning County deputy sheriff on a charge of theft by deception. The owner of Hero Enterprises, 7190 Cool Road, told the deputy that Adams has been going around to her snowplow customers collecting money for work he did not do. Reports show that Adams' current address is unknown, but his driver's license listed his address as Cool Road, Green Township.
Crash kills woman
HANOVERTON -- A 43-year-old village woman is dead after her vehicle slid off a slick, slushy county road and smashed into a tree.
The woman, whose name was not released pending family notification, was killed about 12:05 a.m. today on Whinnery Road near Lakeview Road in Hanover Township, the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.
An accident report noted without elaborating that the vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed when the crash occurred.
The woman was taken to Salem Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the patrol said.
Sled accident kills boy
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (AP) -- A boy crashed his inflatable sled into a tree and died, authorities said.
Blake Justes, 12, of Slippery Rock, his father and sister were sledding down a steep hill Sunday on the Slippery Rock University campus, authorities said.
"There are many hills on the campus and he was on one of the most popular ones," said Ross Feltz, a Slippery Rock spokesman. "The hill he was on is lined with trees on either side, but it's pretty much a wide open hill."
Blake was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Allegheny County coroner's office ruled the death accidental.
While there have been other sledding-related accidents on campus, Feltz couldn't recall any deaths in his 12 years he has worked at the university.
Waterline break
GIRARD -- Traffic on Beechwood Drive was flowing again after city crews fixed a water main break. Low temperatures froze the pipes, which burst around 8 a.m. Monday. The line was repaired and the road was reopened by noon.
Warning about teens
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police are warning residents in the Dream Boulevard area to be on the lookout for two teenage males, one black and one white, telling people they want to shovel snow from sidewalks. The two are trying to get into apartments in the area, police said, advising residents not to let anyone into their homes if they don't know them. Anyone noticing suspicious activity should call police.
Math tournament set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University hosts the seventh annual Regional Challenge 24 Math Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. About 180 pupils in grades four through eight will compete.
The region includes pupils from Trumbull, Mahoning and Mercer, Pa., counties.
House fire in Goshen
SALEM -- Firefighters responded to a house fire at 14900 Country Club Lane in Goshen Township in Mahoning County. The fire was reported about 8:13 p.m. Sunday.
Several area fire departments provided aid in putting out the fire, which was in the Damascus Fire Department's jurisdiction. No other details were available. No one was reported injured.
