FISHING
Pennsylvania report
Mercer County, Shenango Lake: Try fishing the Golden Run Area. Crappies, bluegill, and perch are being caught in that order according to numbers of catches being reported. Minnows are the bait of choice. Best fishing has been early morning or later in the evenings.
Lake Erie, tributaries: The Erie area has certainly been a part of the winter deep freeze with most all of the area tributaries frozen over. Only a few areas of fast moving water remain open, with little open water available to area anglers. Hard water fishing however, has moved into full swing.
The Walnut Creek Marina basin has yielded a fair number of steelhead for those with enough patience to endure the winter blast. Live shiners have been the bait of choice.
The heaviest ice-fishing activity has been on Misery Bay off Presque Isle State Park. A small city of ice shanties dotted the area this past weekend.
Catches were sporadic. Bluegills, and other sunfish have been easily caught although nothing of any size was observed. Anglers in search of perch on Presque Isle Bay have been coming up short. Hopefully it will just be a matter of time before the perch start schooling under the ice.
Ice thickness reports have been varied, although actual measurements in a number of spots varied anywhere from 4 to 7 inches.
Continued cold weather predictions should help the freeze along.
Ohio report
Most of the western basin of Lake Erie has ice cover. Use extreme caution when ice fishing. Currents and windy weather conditions cause areas of unsafe ice.*
Western basin main lake areas are improving, but open water and thin ice still exist. Anglers have started fishing west of South Bass Island for walleye and yellow perch, with the only safe access to the area being from South Bass Island. Mainland fishing has started in nearshore areas around Catawba State Park and various marinas in Marblehead and Catawba.
Anglers are also fishing for yellow perch and bullhead on the following areas of Sandusky Bay: White's Landing, Crystal Rock and around the old Route 2 dike.
Steelhead: Lake Erie's tributaries have for the most part become ice locked. Steelhead fishing is likely over until later this spring.
