SHARON, Pa. -- The closing of the Hubbard schools swimming pool has resulted in a number of Ohio residents inquiring about the Red Cross Learn to Swim program at the F.H. Buhl Club here.
Debbie Clary, Buhl Club aquatic director, said 10-week sessions for levels 1-7 are available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday, beginning Tuesday.
The minimum age is 5, and there is a $10 fee for a 10-week session. For more information, call the club at (724) 981-3700.
Fredonia Lions benefit
FREDONIA, Pa. -- Fredonia Lions Club will host its 46th annual Pancake, Buckwheat and Sausage Supper on Saturday at Stony Point Grange.
Serving time is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Stony Point Grange is at Fredonia and Kremis roads in Mercer County. Proceeds will benefit community projects.
Man, dogs escape fire
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Damage is expected to reach $70,000 after a fire at a Hempfield Township home.
David King, township fire chief, said the blaze broke out around 1 a.m. Friday at the Hartman residence at 46 Hamburg Road.
King didn't know Hartman's first name but said he lived there alone with four dogs and a cat.
Hartman fell asleep on his couch watching television and awakened to find the house filled with smoke.
He and the four dogs were able to get out, but his pet cat perished, King said.
About half of the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters reached the scene, King said, noting that nine departments and 40 firefighters responded to the alarm.
The fire started in the dining room and was determined to be accidental, King said, estimating the loss to building and contents at $70,000. Hartman has fire insurance, he said.
Creative writing workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- The "Work in Progress" creative writing workshop continues monthly meetings through 2004.
The workshops are from 7 to 9 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except November) at Pig Iron Press, 26 N. Phelps St. The November meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 23.
Jim Villani, editor and publisher of Pig Iron Press, facilitates.
Participants share and discuss work at all levels and in all genres including articles, fiction, poetry and criticism.
Market possibility and free-lance procedures also are discussed. Copies can be made on-site.

Blaze damages garage
WARREN -- Damage was estimated at $50,000 in a garage fire at 1365 Francis Ave. S.E.
Fire authorities said the blaze broke out around 3:10 p.m. Friday in the structure owned by Cindy Nabors.
A damaged electrical cord was listed as the cause of the blaze.
