COLUMBUS -- Berlin Hiland joined Dayton Chaminade-Julienne, Springfield Kenton Ridge and South Euclid Regina as the top teams in the second weekly Associated Press girls Ohio high school basketball poll released today.
Perennial state contender Regina holds just a three-point advantage on Ursuline in Division III, due in large part to a lopsided 80-48 loss to Mount Notre Dame last week while Ursuline was staying unbeaten with two wins.
Hiland assumed the No. 1 position in Division IV, moving up from No. 4 a week ago. While maintaining a perfect record, Hiland soared past two teams that didn't lose. No. 1 Mansfield St. Peter's fell to third despite moving to 11-1 on the year. Last week's No. 2 team, Dayton Jefferson, stayed in the same spot even though it began the week with a 33-point head start on Hiland and won twice by an average of 23.5 points.
Maria Stein Marion Local was third in the rankings a week ago but was beaten by Hiland, 50-42, and fell to fourth.
Chaminade-Julienne maintained the largest lead (56 points), had the most first-place votes (20) and the highest point total (322) of any of the No. 1 teams.
Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame was second, with Columbus Mifflin, Barberton and Pickerington North rounding out the top five in Division I.
In Division II, Kenton Ridge held a 42-point edge on Bexley. Oak Harbor was No. 3, trailed by West Branch and New Albany.
Cincinnati Madeira was third in Division III, with Archbold and Orrville filling the next two spots.
Boys poll
Just one week into the 55th annual Ohio Associated Press boys high school basketball poll and already three No. 1 teams have fallen by the wayside.
Ottawa-Glandorf, Findlay Liberty-Benton and Dalton made way for Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Cincinnati North College Hill and New Washington Buckeye Central in the second weekly media balloting released Tuesday.
The three new No. 1s joined the lone holdover, Canton McKinley in Division I.
Ottawa-Glandorf dropped to No. 5 in Division II after a 46-43 loss to St. Marys Memorial, Liberty-Benton dropped to No. 6 in Division III off a 37-33 defeat to Arlington and Dalton plummeted to ninth in Division IV after losing to both West Salem Northwest and to Massillon Tuslaw.
McKinley holds a 26-point edge on No. 2 Cincinnati Moeller, followed by Cincinnati LaSalle, North Canton Hoover and Troy.
The jumbled Division II rankings now find St. Vincent-St. Mary ahead of LaGrange Keystone by 55 points, with Columbus Bexley No. 3 and Newark Licking Valley fourth.
North College Hill's lead is 60 points over Versailles in Division III. Akron Manchester is ranked third followed by Johnstown-Monroe and Dayton Oakwood.
Buckeye Central holds a 32-point advantage over Sebring in the small-school division, with Fort Loramie, Berlin Hiland and Arlington rounding out the rest of the top five teams.
