Fatal crash in Ellsworth
ELLSWORTH -- A three-car crash at U.S. Route 224 and state Route 45 killed one driver, Ann Leslie, 86, of Boardman, and injured another driver, Ann Marie Nehfa, 26, of Austintown, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Canfield post. The patrol had no further information available this morning on the crash, which happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Adult education classes
AUSTINTOWN -- Registration is under way for the township schools' winter adult continuing education program, which begins Feb. 9. Classes that will be offered include include yoga, walking, computers, cake decorating and money management. Political group elections
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts, a local political organization, elected J. Robert Lyden of Canfield as its president.
Lyden, who served as the organization's first president, replaces Mark Belinky of Boardman. Belinky opted not to seek re-election to a third term, and instead will concentrate on his Mahoning County commissioner campaign.
The organization elected Connie Coloutes of Poland as its first vice president and Beth Stanko of Boardman, who is also running for county commissioner, as its second vice president. Mary Morrison of Poland was selected secretary, and Andy Hamady of Poland was re-elected treasurer.
Girard school board
GIRARD -- The board of education has changed its January meeting to 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday at the high school cafeteria. A community forum to discuss the 7.4-mill continuing operating school levy that will appear on the March 2 primary ballot will be at 7 p.m. at the high school auditorium. Stolen-car pursuit
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Lundy, 40, of West Indianola Avenue was arrested at 1:10 a.m. today on Parkview Avenue after police pursued the stolen car he was driving on the South Side. In the car were five cartons of cigarettes, which Austintown police said had been stolen in their community, reports show. Police charged Lundy with receiving stolen property, failure to comply with a police order and driving under suspension. Austintown police also intend to charge Lundy, reports show.
Animals perish in fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three cats and one dog perished in a house fire at 842 E. Avondale Ave. at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Kevin Johnson.
The homeowner was away at the time of the fire, which did about $55,000 damage; it likely began with an electrical short, firefighters said.
Library remains closed
POLAND -- Poland Library, 311 S. Main St., which closed early Wednesday afternoon because of a lack of heat, remained closed today, a library spokeswoman said.
It's not certain when it will reopen because it's not certain how long it will take to repair the boiler, she said.
Drug arrests
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Campbell men were arrested on cocaine possession charges at 6 p.m. Wednesday when members of the vice squad used a search warrant to enter 1754 Richmond Ave.
Ronald Cash, 27, of 12th Street and Craig B. Bembry, 33, of Jean Street each had suspected crack cocaine, police said. Reports don't say if anyone else was in the house, which is owned by a Coronado Avenue man.
Court records show Bembry has had a hit-skip charge pending in municipal court since last October.
