NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Wilmington Area School Board is planning to start contract negotiations with the district's teachers.
The board unanimously approved the four-member negotiation team during Monday's monthly board meeting. President Richard Houlette, Nancy Bretz and John Fauzey will represent the board, and Scott McGrath will serve as spokesman.
The teachers are in the third year of their four-year contract, which will expire in July 2005. Scott Brush, president of the teachers union, said this was the first he heard that the board was ready to begin negotiations.
Houlette said he would like to see an early bird contract reached. Brush commented after the meeting that the district and the teachers have until January 2005 to reach an early bird contract.
In other business, the district has employed a full-time school psychologist. The board approved Cynthia Wright at a salary of $43,000. Wright's employment will be effective March 12, pending release from her current employer.
Custodians' plan
The board updated the full-time custodial compensation plan. An amendment was made to the plan to allow employees eligibility for hospitalization benefits after 30 workdays of their probation period. Before the amendment, custodians were required to work 80 days of their probation period before they were eligible for benefits.
Also, the board employed John C. Book of New Bedford as full-time custodian at a salary of $15,000 and approved Erika Taylor as assistant girls track coach at a salary of $1,400.
