SAFETY TIPS
Keep the fires burning
Tips for using your fireplace safely:
Clear the area around the fireplace and chimney of any combustible materials. Check for obstructions in the chimney, such as bird nests, before lighting it. Trim any tree branches that might hang over the chimney.
Always use a fireplace screen in front of a wood-burning fireplace.
Never overfill the fireplace with wood. Arrange larger logs in the back. Don't burn anything but firewood in your wood-burning fireplace.
Keep a fire extinguisher handy, and make sure smoke detectors are working properly.
Never leave a fire unattended.
Keep wood stacked, covered and outdoors, away from structures and off the ground. Bring in only as much wood as you need for the day or evening. Otherwise, if it contains insects, they can infest your house.
Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned often -- at least once a year if you use it often.
