Garfunkel facesmarijuana charge
HURLEY, N.Y. -- Art Garfunkel, part of the folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel, was charged with marijuana possession after police pulled his limousine over for speeding in upstate New York.
Garfunkel, 62, had a small amount of marijuana in his jacket pocket when a state trooper stopped the limo Saturday afternoon in Hurley, 55 miles southwest of Albany, the Daily Freeman of Kingston reported.
The trooper smelled marijuana after approaching the vehicle, in which Garfunkel was the lone passenger.
Garfunkel, of Manhattan, was scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 28 on the charge, which carries a possible $100 fine, or he could respond by mail.
A representative for Legacy Recording, Garfunkel's New York-based record label, did not immediately return a phone call Wednesday.
Timberlake signs dealfor tell-all autobiography
LONDON -- Justin Timberlake has signed a deal with a British publisher to spill the beans about his celebrity private life in an autobiography, reports Ananova.com.
The "Rock Your Body" singer, whose past and present girlfriends include Cameron Diaz and Britney Spears, has sold the book's U.K. rights to London's Transworld Publishers, a division of Random House, which plans to have it out by September.
There's no title yet, but the team behind Madonna's "Sex" book is in charge of design, according to Booktrust, which tracks the U.K. publishing industry. Timberlake is still on the lookout for a U.S. publisher.
Hit by Cruise missile, psychiatrists fire back
LOS ANGELES -- The American Psychiatric Association is concerned that some comments by Tom Cruise could prevent people who need help from getting it, reports MSNBC.com.
"The Last Samurai" star has been blasting psychiatry, and reportedly said the profession should be "outlawed" and is "an utter waste of time."
"It's like arguing that the Earth is flat," said Dr. James Scully, the medical director of the American Psychiatric Association. "Psychiatry is a branch of medicine supported by substantial research. Comments like that are absurd. If someone is suffering and needs to get help, it would be a shame if they do not get the help that could help them because a celebrity says something."
Would Scully welcome a dialogue with Cruise?
"Yes. We'd welcome an open dialogue. A Scientology speech? No," he said, referring to Cruise's religion, which is opposed to psychiatry. "We don't find discussions about Scientology useful."
Cars and stars
PARK CITY, Utah -- Paris Hilton, the hotel heiress, popped in at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City and borrowed a car for the weekend.
When she refused to return the $100,000 Mercedes G Wagon SUV on Monday as scheduled, the car company "sent out search parties," reports the New York Post. The vehicle was retrieved Tuesday.
Meanwhile Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore arrived at the premiere of Kutcher's sci-fi flick "The Butterfly Effect" in matching shearling coats. How cute is that?
Upon spotting his festival loaner, a Cadillac Escalade, Kutcher declared, "I want this car," whereupon a General Motors marketer arranged for him to have one just like it -- complete with DVD/CD player, Tivo, wireless Internet, and three TV screens -- when he returns to Los Angeles.
