Enlarged heart caused freshman's death

GREENVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- The death of a 19-year-old college basketball player in his dorm room last month was caused by an enlarged heart and an irregular heartbeat, according to autopsy results.
Thiel College freshman Shawn Walton, of East Liverpool, Ohio, was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged heart in September but was cleared to play with the Tomcats, according to Mercer County Deputy Coroner Cris Loutzenhiser.
When the 6-foot-4-inch, 225-pound student died Dec. 11, his heart was twice the size of a typical person's heart for that height and weight, Loutzenhiser said.
Loutzenhiser ruled that Walton's heart problems caused his death after toxicology tests showed nothing unusual. The autopsy was released Monday.
Family and friends said Walton showed few symptoms before he collapsed Dec. 11 after complaining he had trouble breathing, Loutzenhiser said.
Walton had four points and three rebounds in four games this season. He played about 10 minutes a game.
