Cemetery rates change
NILES -- The Niles City Cemetery Board has changed rates effective March 1.
Charges for cemetery lots will be $550 for an adult single grave, $300 for a mausoleum crypt and $50 for an infant grave up to 32 inches.
Opening and closing charges will be $600 for an adult grave on weekdays and Saturdays and $800 for Sundays and holidays.
Disinterments will be $1,000, mausoleum entombments will be $300, cremains burials on weekdays only will be $100, and infant burials will be $50.
There will be no cremain burials on Saturdays, and Sunday and holiday interments will take place only when deemed necessary by the board of health.
Also, the board agreed to charge $50 for monthly rental on a mausoleum space, for concrete foundations for veterans' markers and for a cemetery deed.
All cemetery lots must be paid in full at the time of purchase and all opening charges must be paid in full before burial.

Niles schools update
NILES -- Because of the snow day last Thursday and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday, the city schools will extend the second grading period to Friday.
All pupils will have an early release day Friday.
Night at the Races
McDONALD -- The McDonald Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus will have a Night at The Races and Las Vegas Night at 7 p.m. Saturday at the K of C Hall, 1057 Illinois Ave.

Woman dies in car crash
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- A New Castle woman was killed after her Pontiac Sunfire crashed into a tree on Pa. Route 65 in Wayne Township.
Pennsylvania State Police said Jacqueline Ann Tomak, 33, of East Elizabeth Street was traveling at a high speed when she lost control of her car in the northbound lane between Wilson Street and Wurtemburg Road at 12:35 p.m. Monday. Police said the car went across the road and sideways before crashing into a tree.
Tomak was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, police said.
Horse killed in accident
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- State police said an Amish man's horse was killed when his buggy pulled into the path of a car at the intersection of Mercer-New Castle and Cannery roads in Springfield Township.
Police said Eli Byler of New Wilmington was driving the buggy and pulled out of Cannery Road into the path of an eastbound car driven by Christopher A. Patterson of Mercer around 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
Democrats' meeting
POLAND -- The Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts, a local political organization, will have a meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road.
The group will elect its officers at the meeting.
Vehicle used in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone used a vehicle to ram through the side brick wall of Bags to Riches, 3602 Market St., and stole the cash register and an undetermined amount of clothing, police said.
The break-in was discovered around 7:45 a.m. Monday.
Police confiscated nine taillight fragments believed to have come from the vehicle used to gain entry to the store.
Boy faces various charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old Hilton Avenue boy out past the city's 11 p.m. curfew was arrested at 12:40 a.m. Monday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a dangerous ordnance and curfew violation, police said.
The weapon, a loaded sawed-off shotgun, was found in the boy's waistband when police stopped to question him in the middle of Southern Boulevard near Hilton, reports show.
The boy was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center. Seven shotgun shells were found in his coat's lining during a search there, police said.
House burglarized
YOUNGSTOWN -- After being gone for about a week, a woman who lives in the 2100 block of Gregory Avenue returned home Monday afternoon to find that the place had been burglarized and three jewelry boxes with roughly $12,000 worth of items taken, reports show.
Two second-floor bedrooms were ransacked.
Police found that a first-floor storm window had been removed.
