Driver reports car stolen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police said a man with a gun took a Pontiac Sunfire on Cuba Street. The 45-year-old driver was stopped at a stop sign at 5:59 p.m. Saturday when a black man, about 6 feet tall, wearing dark clothes and a light blue cap and scarves pointed a gun at him and demanded the car. The car is a white 2002 Pontiac Sunfire.
Theft of money reported
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An employee at a billiard hall said he gave his money to a man after he was threatened with a big stick. City police said the robbery was reported at 1:48 p.m. Friday, but occurred sometime earlier in the day. The employee at K & amp; K Billiard on East Washington Street did not immediately call police, they said. The employee said he handed over money to a white man in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, weighing about 210 pounds.
Woman, 33, is killedin one-vehicle accident
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- A New Castle woman was killed after her Pontiac Sunfire crashed into a tree on Pa. Route 65 in Wayne Township. Pennsylvania State Police said Jacqueline Ann Tomak, 33, of East Elizabeth Street was traveling at a high speed when she lost control of her car in the northbound lane between Wilson Street and Wurtemburg Road at 12:35 p.m. Monday. Police said the car went across the road and sideways before crashing into a tree. Tomak was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, police said.
Horse killed in accident
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- State police said an Amish man's horse was killed when his buggy pulled into the path of a car at the intersection of Mercer-New Castle and Cannery roads in Springfield Township. Police said Eli Byler of New Wilmington was driving the buggy and pulled out of Cannery Road into the path of an eastbound car driven by Christopher A. Patterson of Mercer around 12:45 p.m. Sunday. The car struck the horse and the front of the buggy. The horse was killed, but Byler and Patterson escaped injury, police said.
Salem home break-in
SALEM -- A home on the 500 block of Walnut Street was broken into but nothing appears to have been taken, police said. The crime occurred sometime late last week. It was reported at 10:17 a.m. Saturday.
Zoning boards to meet
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Zoning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals will have a joint meeting at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday at the Beaver Township Administration Office in the South Range Plaza. At the meeting the two boards will elect new officers, discuss projected zoning goals for 2004, and review proposed amendments to the township zoning ordinance.
Democrats' meeting
POLAND -- The Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts, a local political organization, will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road. The group will elect its officers at the meeting.
Vandals target arenaand center in Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- Vandals armed with BB guns have targeted an arena and neighboring center in Johnstown, causing about $10,000 in damage. The vandals are being blamed for five broken windows in the past six weeks at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena and the nearby Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center. Officials say they're baffled by the vandalism. "It makes you sick. I don't know why they would target us," said James Vautar, the general manager at the war memorial. Until police catch the vandals, officials plan to add more security cameras around the sites, hoping to catch them in the act. Arena officials are also considering a reward to help catch the culprits. "Maybe if we give these [people] their 15 minutes of fame, they won't be back," Vautar said. "I'll be happy."
Vehicle used in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone used a vehicle to ram through the side brick wall of Bags to Riches, 3602 Market St., and stole the cash register and an undetermined amount of clothing from the racks, police said. The break-in was discovered around 7:45 a.m. Monday. Police confiscated nine taillight fragments believed to have come from the vehicle used to gain entry to the store. The total loss would not be known until an inventory is done, police said.
