Miami University to increase tuition in the fall

Sunday, February 29, 2004

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) -- Miami University's overall tuition will go up by 8.5 percent this fall, but increases will range from 1 percent to 15 percent for Ohio residents after in-state scholarships are figured in.
Trustees approved the increase Friday, blaming stagnant state help and rising health-care costs.
Tuition for all students will be $19,642 this fall. Trustees switched to the single tuition rate last spring but promised scholarships for in-state students that would bring actual costs down to previous levels.
Tuition in the 2003-04 school year was $8,353 for in-state and $18,103 for out-of-state students, who make up less than a third of enrollees.
Scholarships will bring the in-state tuition to $9,063 for continuing students this fall, trustees said. Depending on financial need, entering freshmen will pay $8,442 to $9,642 after scholarships.
Officials said the change to a single tuition rate provides scholarships for middle-income families who make too much money to qualify for federal aid and otherwise would need student loans.
A record 15,000 applicants are vying for 3,450 openings this fall, officials said.
Trustees also approved applying the maximum 9.9 percent increase allowed by the state at Miami's regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown. Tuition will be $3,840 for students with up to 68 credit hours and $5,832 for those with 68 or more credits.
