CANFIELD -- Two Canfield High School students have been charged with possessing deadly weapons on school grounds after police conducted a search of the school parking lot Thursday morning.
Officers used a police dog to sniff cars for drugs. Although no students were arrested for drug possession, police found knives in two cars.
Police said Joseph M. Brookhart, 18, of Woodbury Court, had a small pocket knife and a lock-blade knife on the shifter console of the car he drove to school. Although officers first turned him over to school officials, the school principal requested that the matter be handled by police, reports show.
Police found another knife, with a blade of about 31/2 inches, in another vehicle driven to school by a teen student. His charge was referred to the Mahoning County Juvenile Court.
Also in the vehicle were two wooden clubs that police said looked like ax handles.
The student said his mother kept the clubs under the driver's seat for self-defense.
