Dems to come to areain presidential campaigns
Democratic presidential campaigns are coming to the Mahoning Valley just days before Tuesday's primary election. At 2:30 p.m. Sunday, U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt will be at the Operating Engineers Hall, 291 McClurg Road, Boardman, on behalf of U.S. Sen. John Kerry. At 7 p.m. Monday, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, who also is running for the nomination, will speak in the Chestnut Room at Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center.
Charges in assault
STRUTHERS -- James Jonda, 18, of Monroe Street, Lowellville, was bound over to the grand jury Wednesday on an assault charge stemming from an episode Feb. 17. Police said Jonda punched his mother and broke windows at their house. After being placed in the rear of a Lowellville police car, Jonda also broke a rear-door window, police said. He will be sentenced in municipal court here April 26 on charges of criminal damaging and disorderly conduct. A charge of resisting arrest was dismissed.
Income tax charges
CLEVELAND -- A one-count information was filed Wednesday against Michael G. Malvasi of Timber Run Drive, Canfield, that charges him with filing a false tax return for 1998. He is accused of underreporting income he received from two companies, Mill-It Company and Champion Excavation. The case was investigated by the IRS criminal investigation division.
Theft, forgery charges
STRUTHERS -- Jeffrey M. Gallagher, 21, of Creed Street was arraigned in municipal court Wednesday on charges of theft and forgery. Police said Gallagher stole at least two checks from the mother of his son, made them out to himself and cashed them. The police report says the theft likely occurred Jan. 20 or Jan. 22. His preliminary hearing is Friday in municipal court.
10-year-old charged
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 10-year-old Berkley Avenue boy threw a golf club at a school bus near his home Wednesday and shattering glass hit the 75-year-old bus driver, police said. The boy was arrested on a felonious assault charge and taken to the juvenile justice center. He told police he didn't mean to hit the bus. The bus driver told police he would seek medical attention for facial injuries.
Man reports burglary
BOARDMAN -- A Carter Circle man told police that more than $14,000 worth of property was stolen from his home early Wednesday. Reports say $7,500 worth of music CDs, $1,000 worth of DVDs, $6,000 in gold chains and $200 in cash were stolen from the home.
House burglarized
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Cohasset Drive man who went to jail in December returned home Wednesday to find his house had been burglarized, reports show. A pane of glass had been broken out of the front door to gain access to the deadbolt lock. Items reported missing include speakers, five high-back wrought-iron chairs, two beveled-glass doors from a mantel, two beveled-glass doors from the dining room, a beveled-glass door to the basement, furnace blower and motor, VCR and CD player.
Grand jury gets rape case
STRUTHERS -- John W. Daniels Jr., 34, of Washington Street, Lowellville, was bound over to the grand jury during his preliminary hearing Wednesday in municipal court here. He is charged with raping a 9-year-old Lowellville girl Feb. 19. He is in Mahoning County jail.
Tools reported stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating two separate reports that tools were stolen in recent days. An employee of American Garage Door Co. told police someone broke into the North Meridian Road building sometime Tuesday night or Wednesday morning by throwing a concrete block through a window. Tools, $700 in cash and $2,500 in garage door parts were stolen. A North Navarre Road man told police someone broke into a work box in his truck while it was parked in his driveway sometime between Sunday and Wednesday. Tools valued at about $2,000 were taken.
AWOL arrest
CAMPBELL -- Police arrested a city woman charged with military desertion after the Army issued a warrant for her arrest. Rebecca L. Gigax, 24, of Coitsville Road, was taken into custody Tuesday at her home.
