Man dies in house fire
NEW CASTLE -- Charles P. Kimmel, 70, of Old Butler Road died in a fire at his house Friday night, according to Pennsylvania State Police at the New Castle barracks. The fire started at 5:42 p.m. in the Shenango Township home. The fire remains under investigation. No further information was available late Saturday night.
Hart will seek re-election
BRADFORD WOODS, Pa. -- U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart of Bradford Woods, R-4th, announced that she had launched her campaign for re-election after filing nominating petitions in Harrisburg signed by Republicans in every corner of her district. Hart is currently in her second term representing the district, which includes part or all of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, Mercer and Westmoreland counties. In Congress, she serves on the financial services, judiciary and science committees. Hart was a lawyer in private practice and a member of the Pennsylvania Senate before her election to Congress in 2000.
Food distribution
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The last day Lawrence County residents can register for the March 30 food program distribution is March 1. Township and borough residents who missed the December distribution must call on a Tuesday or a Thursday to be put back on the list. Yellow cards are still valid for New Castle residents, and they must be present when picking up food vouchers. This will be the last distribution with the yellow cards. Information about reregistering will be given during voucher pick up. All other distribution sites will not be reregistering at this time. Seeking volunteers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Contact Emergency Assistance Referral Service, a telephone help line, is looking for new volunteers. Spring training classes will be held Saturdays, starting this week to March 27. All classes are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Jameson Rehabilitation Center, 3410 Wilmington Road, Neshannock Township. Telephone help line volunteers are trained to focus on solutions, make referrals to community agencies and initiate emergency services when necessary.
