Route 46 lane to close
AUSTINTOWN -- Beginning Monday, the Ohio Department of Transportation will close one of the two lanes on state Route 46 at Interstate 80 as part of the project to rebuild that interchange. The project will cost $7.2 million and is set to be complete in fall 2005.
Man jailed in child's rape
LOWELLVILLE -- A village man is being held in the Mahoning County Justice Center on $250,000 bond after being arraigned on rape charges in Struthers Municipal Court.
John William Daniels Jr., 34, of Washington Street, was arrested Friday after the mother of a 9-year-old village girl told police the man had raped her daughter.
According to the police report, Daniels assaulted the girl Thursday afternoon.
Daniels' preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday in Struthers.
Candidates' forum
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Community Mobilization Committee will hold a forum at 6:30 p.m. Monday at New Bethel Baptist Church on Hillman Street for candidates running for Mahoning County commissioner, prosecutor, sheriff, juvenile court judge, Ohio 60th House District representative and 17th Congressional District representative.
Facing several charges
CAMPBELL -- John J. Mamounis, 23, of Fairview Street, was arraigned in municipal court Friday morning on charges of resisting arrest, obstructing police business, failure to control his vehicle, failing to stop after an accident and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.
According to police, Mamounis left the scene of an accident on First Street on Thursday evening and ran from police after they spotted him walking along Fairview Avenue.
After a struggle, police used Mace to subdue him and said they found two handguns and ammunition on him.
He is to appear in municipal court Friday for a preliminary hearing.
For sale: Wal-Mart store
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Wal-Mart has put its Shenango Valley Freeway store up for sale in anticipation of moving into a new Supercenter to be built about 1.5 miles away.
The company has listed the 114,513-square-foot store, built at 3300 Shenango Valley Freeway in 1991, with CB Richard Ellis, an international sales and management company, and is asking just under $3.7 million for the building and 13.55 acres.
That includes a parking lot for 753 cars.
Offers are being accepted until March 8.
The listing indicates that Wal-Mart expects to open its new 207,000-square-foot Supercenter near Stupka Buick Pontiac on North Hermitage Road (Pa. Route 18) in June 2005.
Final design plans for that project have yet to be submitted to the city.
New zoning inspector
COITSVILLE -- Township trustees appointed Boris Vuksanovich as zoning inspector during a regular meeting this week.
During a reorganizational meeting, trustees named Walter Avdey chairman, Gerald Backo vice chairman and reappointed Dino Commisso to the zoning board of appeals and Mike Stepitech to the zoning board.
Trustees also determined that Michael Morris will continue to serve as acting police chief, and Nick Pope will continue to serve as fire chief.
Women's club banquet
BOARDMAN -- The John F. Kennedy Federated Democratic Women's Club will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Friday at the Georgetown on South Avenue in Boardman. The guest speaker is Jerry Springer, a television talk show host who had considered running this year for the U.S. Senate. The organization will honor Shirlee Marsico of Canfield as its woman of the year. Marsico, the wife of Mahoning County Engineer Richard Marsico, has been active in Democratic political campaigns and belongs to several organizations. School application
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Community School will have open application for the 2004-05 school year from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday. Children currently enrolled do not need to reapply.
Those applying are subject to a lottery per grade level. For kindergarten, children must be 5 on or before Sept. 30. Call (330) 746-2240.
