NILES -- After eight years at the helm of the city schools, Superintendent Patrick N. Guliano is stepping down.
Guliano, who held the position since 1996, submitted his resignation as superintendent to board of education members at Thursday's meeting. He said he had not made members aware of his decision before the meeting.
Guliano gave no specific reasons for his decision, saying simply he "just felt it was time to step down."
He will leave the post July 31, but the board has not made any plans to replace him.
Future
Resigning as superintendent means Guliano has the option of remaining with the district in a different capacity. He is a tenured teacher. He said he could take a position as a building principal or even a classroom teacher but has made no decision yet.
He noted he also could take a position with another school district.
"There are a lot of avenues open to me right now," he said.
"I plan on doing some serious soul-searching in the next couple of months."
Guliano said full retirement is another option open to him, though right now he isn't considering that route.
"I have enough time in to retire if I want to," he said. "But I think I want to continue doing what I love doing."
Guliano, who grew up in Niles and attended Niles schools, came to the superintendent's position after working in Warren schools for 25 years.
In that district, he worked as a teacher, as an assistant principal and as central office supervisor for 17 years.
"I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of great people," he said. "I learned a lot from some really good people."
