WARREN -- A 32-year-old man wanted on numerous charges attempted to run from police and learned he wasn't faster then the department's 10-year-old dog, Berry.
Moments after Ernest Averiett III, of Warren, sped by cops, Officer Wayne Mackey let his partner loose.
"He was fast but no faster than this dog," Mackey said of his K-9 partner. "It didn't take long for Berry to get him, but Averiett kept fighting with the dog. He kept trying to get up and kept kicking Berry."
The dog was not injured. Averiett was bitten but not seriously injured, Mackey said.
A woman had called police about 2 a.m. Thursday and reported that Averiett was in the parking lot of Fairview Gardens Housing Projects and had a gun. The woman had filed a report Tuesday saying that Averiett had burned her with an iron Aug. 18.
Reports did not specify what type of iron.
Officers tried to arrest Averiett in the parking lot, but he ran.
After Averiett was arrested, he was taken to the Trumbull County Jail.
He appeared in municipal court Friday and pleaded innocent to charges of felonious assault, driving under suspension, reckless operation and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.
He is being held with bond set at $150,000.
