NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Jammers pin 7-4 loss on Scrappers in series opener

Mahoning Valley lost its third straightand fell three behind in wild card race.

NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers squandered an early 3-0 lead against Jamestown and fell to the Jammers 7-4 in the opening game of a six-game homestand at Eastwood Field Saturday night.
The loss was the third straight and dropped the Scrappers three games back in the race for a wild card playoff spot in the New York-Penn League standings.
Important homestand
A successful homestand is important for Mahoning Valley because the final nine games of the season are all on the road.
"You hate to give games away," said Scrappers manager Mike Sarbaugh. "It would of been nice to come out and win the first one but it didn't happen so you just have to come out tomorrow and start again."
The Scrappers struggled defensively and a some sloppy baserunning took the team out of three potential rallies that could have played a role in a different outcome on the scoreboard.
"We made some mistakes tonight that hurt us," Sarbaugh said. "It's just one of those things that happens in baseball."
Jammers rallied to win
The Jammers rallied for six runs in the final four innings to overcome the three-run deficit that the Scrappers enjoyed after the second inning.
Juan Lindesey's 7th inning single scored Nick Ewen with the go-ahead run off Mahoning Valley relief pitcher Richard De Los Santos.
The game-winning hit was the second RBI of the game for Lindesey who also hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Jamestown tacked on three unearned insurance runs in the eighth inning after an opening error by second baseman Chris Clem.
Mahoning Valley opened the game with a run in the first on a single by Argenis Reyes who advanced to second on an error. Chris Gimenez drove in Reyes with a single to give the Scrappers a 1-0 lead.
Mahoning Valley added two more runs in the second on back-to-back doubles by Teo Encarnacion and Clem and a sacrifice fly by catcher Omar Casillas.
Final tally
Trailing by four runs in the eighth, Brett Parker hit a double for the Scrappers and came home to score on another double by Tim Montgomery to cut the lead to 7-4.
The Scrappers could get no closer as Jamestown pitcher Patrick Hogan struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 10th save.
