Investigators find no new evidence in counselors' deaths

Police have no motive or suspects in the slayings.
JENNER, Calif. (AP) -- In this picturesque spot where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, authorities continued to search for clues Saturday in the shooting deaths of a young couple while residents feared for their safety. "I"m terrified," said Julia Bechtold, 27. "It's just that we're so small, so anytime something happens, it seems so out of place."
Police have no suspects and no motive in the slayings of Lindsay Cutshall, 23, of Fresno, Ohio, and Jason Allen, 26, of Zeeland, Mich. Their bodies were discovered Wednesday on remote Fish Head Beach, days after they were reported missing.
Cutshall and Allen were missionaries spending the summer as whitewater rafting guides at Rock-N-Water, a Christian outdoor adventure camp in the Sierra foothills town of Coloma, about 40 miles east of Sacramento.
Autopsies completed Friday showed the victims, who were found in their sleeping bags, had been shot in the head at close range. Authorities have ruled out a murder-suicide, and there was no evidence of trauma, robbery or sexual assault.
The Sonoma County sheriff's department said investigators had uncovered no new evidence Saturday.
"They're just combing the area and looking for leads from the public," spokesman Dave Huber said.
Meanwhile, people in this tiny hamlet of barely 100 residents could not shake the news of the slayings.
"It's crazy," said Keary Sorenson, 49, a volunteer at the town visitors' center. "In an hour, I'm going out to that exact spot where the murders took place for a seal watch."
Jenner's one gas station, usually busy on summer weekends, was empty.
Dennis Brown, 55, who sells smoked salmon on the roadside, said business has been bad since the deaths were reported.
"Who wants to come out here now?" he asked.
Residents said it was hard to cope with the deaths of Cutshall and Allen, a devoutly religious couple set to be married next month.
Bechtold said last weekend she was at the same spot on the beach where the bodies were found.
"I was telling my boyfriend how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place," she said. "Now we see this is a place where someone who camps on the beach can get shot."
