Roofing contract awarded
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Springfield school board agreed to pay Roth Brothers Inc. of Youngstown about $37,000 to repair the intermediate school roof.
Officials said Thursday that they hope to have the work completed before school starts Sept. 8.
Other bidders for the contract were: Boak & amp; Sons of Youngstown, about $53,000; Advanced Roofing Co. Inc. of Youngstown, about $80,000; and Slippery Rock Commercial Roofing Inc. of New Castle, nearly $81,000. Administrators said that of the companies submitting bids, Roth Brothers and Boak & amp; Sons were the only two qualified to repair the type of roof that is at the intermediate school.
Illegal immigrant caught
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said they picked up another illegal immigrant on Interstate 80, this time in Wolf Creek Township.
The man, identified as Jose D. Andino, 54, of Honduras, was stopped for speeding around 10 a.m. Thursday. He was turned over to federal immigration officials.
State police have caught nearly 80 illegal immigrants on I-80 this month.
Prescription forgery
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police arrested Kevin McFetridge of Bentley Road, Espyville, on charges of forgery, receiving stolen property and unlawful acts in connection with a forged drug prescription.
Employees at the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 275 Main St. called police Wednesday after McFetridge presented a suspicious prescription to be filled. The prescription turned out to be on a stolen prescription blank and forged.
McFetridge was arrested when he returned to pick up the prescription. He posted $5,000 bond and was released.
ZZ Top concert canceled
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- The End of the Summer Jam concert scheduled for Sept. 5 at Lake Erie Speedway, featuring ZZ Top, has been canceled because of poor ticket sales, organizers said.
The concert is the second at the speedway this summer to be canceled due to slow sales; an Aug. 1 bill featuring Peter Frampton and Foghat was the first.
Two other concerts went off as planned. Country musicians Rascal Flatts and Gary Allan drew 7,000 fans July 25, and Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blue Oyster Cult drew 5,000 in May.

Military band concert
WARREN -- The Warren Junior Military Band will play a free outdoor concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at Packard Music Hall's outdoor band shell.
If it rains, the concert will be inside the music hall.
The band has been playing concerts in the city every summer since 1927, and this marks its fifth local performance of the summer.
Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets to watch the program of John Phillip Sousa-style music. Directors Paul Brizzi and Jonathan Willis will conduct.
Support for the concert is provided by the Ohio Arts Council, Giant Eagle Charities, local businesses and individuals and fund raising by member families.

Off-track betting parlor
GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Horse racing bettors have a new place to wager in Westmoreland County.
MEC Pennsylvania Racing Inc. opened an off-track betting parlor last week at the former site of Bobby Dale's Restaurant & amp; Lounge, once a popular nightclub.
The facility's grand opening was scheduled Friday, with Roger Huston, the longtime racing announcer at The Meadows, scheduled to appear and call the afternoon racing card at The Meadows in Washington County using a special remote link to the Greensburg facility, some 50 miles away.
The last off-track betting parlor in the county, Ladbrokes at the since-razed Greengate Mall, closed in September 2000.
Girls injured by fire hose
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP) -- Two young girls were injured when they were struck by a fire hose that had become uncoiled and was whipping behind a truck rushing to a fire.
Erin Schmitt and Joelynn Jeffress, both 10 and from Coraopolis, were hurt about 2:30 p.m. Thursday while standing at the front gate of Erin's home.
