Yankees 9, Orioles 7
NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez homered for the third straight day, and Hideki Matsui keyed New York's five-run fourth with a two-run double. Tony Clark hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Rodrigo Lopez (8-7), and Kenny Lofton also connected as the Yankees greeted new teammate Esteban Loaiza with their 11th win in 13 games over Baltimore this season despite being outhit 14-9. With the win, and Boston's 4-3 loss to Minnesota, the Yankees took a season-high 91/2-game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East. Orlando Hernandez (3-0) allowed nine hits and struck out nine in five innings, and Mariano Rivera got three outs for his major league-leading 37th save in 40 chances.
Twins 4, Red Sox 3
MINNEAPOLIS -- New shortstop Orlando Cabrera made a key error in his Boston debut, and Johan Santana outpitched Pedro Martinez. Cabrera, replacing longtime star Nomar Garciaparra at shortstop, also homered in his first at-bat with Boston. The Gold Glove infielder was acquired from Montreal in a four-team deal that sent Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs just before baseball's trade deadline Saturday. Santana (10-6) struck out 12, one more than Martinez, who left after seven innings with a 3-2 lead. Martinez gave up seven hits and tied Roger Clemens' club record with his 68th game with 10 or more strikeouts.
Athletics 4, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mark Redman pitched seven strong innings; Eric Chavez homered, and Oakland increased its AL West lead over slumping Texas. Mark Kotsay homered, and Adam Melhuse drove in two runs for the A's, who took three out of four in the series to take a 11/2-game lead over the Rangers. The A's have won eight of their last nine to improve from 41/2 games behind the Rangers on July 23. Redman (8-8) gave up one run and six hits on a humid, 95-degree afternoon. He struck out four and didn't issue a walk in sending Texas to its seventh loss in nine games. Rookie Nick Regilio (0-2) allowed three runs and six hits over five innings in his second major league start.
White Sox 6, Tigers 4
DETROIT -- Ben Davis and Aaron Rowand homered, and Freddy Garcia pitched into the eighth inning to help Chicago snap its season-high seven-game losing streak. Rowand and Paul Konerko each had three of the 14 hits for the White Sox, whose last win was July 24 against the Tigers. Garcia (9-9) allowed four runs and five hits in 71/3 innings and struck out eight and walked one. Shingo Takatsu pitched the ninth for his ninth save in as many opportunities.
Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Dewon Brazelton gave up one run and three hits in 62/3 innings, and Aubrey Huff hit a two-run homer. Brazelton (4-3) struck out four and walked four, and has given up just three runs overall in 12 2-3 innings in winning consecutive starts. Danys Baez pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save. Alexis Rios hit his first major league homer and and drove in three runs for the Blue Jays.
Angels 3, Mariners 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Bartolo Colon won his fifth straight start, and Robb Quinlan homered and doubled in the go-ahead run for the Angels. Colon (10-8) allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings, keeping the Angels 21/2 games behind Oakland in the AL West and sending the Mariners to their 18th loss in 19 road games. Kevin Gregg pitched 12/3 scoreless innings, and Scot Shields got four outs for his fourth save.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 6, Mets 5
ATLANTA -- Andruw Jones homered and drove in four runs off former teammate Tom Glavine, and the Braves completed a three-game sweep. Eli Marrero and Chipper Jones each had three hits for the Braves, who won their fifth straight, and seventh in eight games, to move a season-high 12 games over .500 (58-46).
Astros 7, Reds 5
CINCINNATI -- Adam Everett's eighth-inning suicide squeeze drove in the go-ahead run, and Roy Oswalt (11-8) beat the Cincinnati Reds again. Morgan Ensberg had three RBIs for the Astros, including a sacrifice fly in the eighth that cut their deficit to 5-4. After Jeff Kent scored the tying run on a bases-loaded walk by John Riedling (4-3) to Craig Biggio, Everett laid down a terrific bunt just beyond the reach of reliever Todd Van Poppel for a base hit that allowed Jeff Bagwell to score from third.
Rockies 10, Diamondbacks 2
DENVER -- Jeromy Burnitz drove in four runs with a pair of homers to back Aaron Cook's second complete game, and Colorado completed a three-game sweep. Vinny Castilla, Todd Helton and Aaron Miles also homered for the Rockies, who have won seven straight against the Diamondbacks.
Dodgers 2, Padres 1
SAN DIEGO -- Pinch-hitter Robin Ventura homered in the 12th inning, sending Los Angeles to a victory over San Diego.
Steve Finley went 2-for-5 with a double and a run in his first start for the Dodgers since being acquired moments before the trade deadline Saturday in a five-player deal with Arizona.
Cardinals 6, Giants 1
SAN FRANCISCO -- Woody Williams pitched 61/3 dominant innings for his fifth straight victory and 100th of his career, and Scott Rolen's first-inning homer stood up in St. Louis win over San Francisco. Williams (8-6) allowed five hits and two walks, retiring the final 12 hitters he faced -- and even getting Barry Bonds three times. Giants starter Jason Schmidt also entered with 99 career victories, but he couldn't overcome his early mistake to Rolen, who hit a two-run shot. St. Louis added four late runs against San Francisco's bullpen. Schmidt (13-4) struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing six hits and two walks while losing his second straight start at home.
