YOUNGSTOWN -- The Building and Sites Committee of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Friday discussed purchasing a site for the proposed new East Side Branch, but made no recommendation to the library's board of trustees.
The building and sites committee met in closed session for nearly an hour. The committee is considering six sites, said Carlton A. Sears, library director.
In open session, the committee delayed action on beginning the process of choosing an architect for the new East Side building until library officials have a better idea of what they want, Sears said.
The new building would replace the current library at 6 N. Jackson St.
Other action
In other action, the building and sites committee approved resolutions that recommend the library board:
UAuthorize Sears to begin negotiations with St. John's Episcopal Church concerning the cost sharing to repair deteriorated portions of the retaining wall that runs along the north property line of the Main Library and adjoining the church.
USell library properties at 11822 South Ave. Ext., North Lima, and 151 Second St., Lowellville, once they are no longer needed; and authorize Sears to negotiate directly with potential buyers and to solicit bids from buyers.
UAuthorize the clerk-treasurer to place and open bids for the installation of ice-melt systems at the Austintown and Poland branches. Sears said ice jams in the gutters are damaging the buildings.
UAuthorize the clerk-treasurer to place and open bids for the installation of carpet and windows at the Canfield Branch. Sears said the carpet will not last and he wants to investigate replacing carpet around the book stacks rather than all the carpet and evaluate the worth of replacing current single-pane windows with more energy-efficient windows.
