April 9-May 23: Raku Pottery at the Weller Gallery. Raku pottery is a method of glazing red-hot pottery by submerging it in combustible material to achieve unusual surface detail. Weller Gallery hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
April 30, May 1: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Friends of Fellows Riverside Garden Plant Sale. Perennials, including those for the shade garden, will be available along with annuals, herbs, shrubs, vegetables and summer bulbs.
May-August: Postcards From the Past at Melnick Museum. Over 100 years of sentiments are expressed in postcard messages written by summertime tourists describing the beauty of Mill Creek Park.
May 2 and 23: 2-3:30 p.m. Tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens. A guide will point out highlights while sharing anecdotes and history. Sign in at the reception desk on the afternoon of the tour.
May 4: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Beginning Ikebana. Members of Ikebana Youngstown will mentor students who would like to learn the art of arranging fresh flowers in a Japanese style. Flowers and supplies will be available for use in the classroom. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $10 for residents, $13 for nonresidents.
May 4, 11, 18 and 25: Yoga in the Gardens. 5:30-7 p.m., Tuesdays. Intermediate/Level 2. Reduce stress and relax while learning the basics of energizing yoga movements taught by Heidi Suraci. Herbal tea will be served after class. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $36.
May 6, 13, 20 and 27: 8:30 to 10 a.m. or 5:30 to 7 p.m. Gentle Yoga/Level 1. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $36.
May 7: Registration deadline for trip to Spring Gardens in Cleveland. Join Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens on May 19, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., for this trip to Cleveland Botanical Garden, Gardenview Horticultural Park and Petitti's Garden Center in Strongsville. Fee includes bus transportation, admission and lunch. Call FRG to register. Fee: $65 ($50 Friends of Fellows Riverside Garden members).
May 8 and 9: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Garden Mart. The Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown will host this spring sale at Fellows Riverside Gardens. An assortment of hanging baskets and bedding plants will be available.
May 9: Mother's Day Buffet. Noon, 1:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. Celebrate Mother's Day at Fellows Riverside Gardens and enjoy a buffet catered by the Georgetown. Afterward, take a walk in the gardens to enjoy the spring flowers. Call FRG to register. Fee: $15.50 adults; $9.50 children.
May 11: 6:30 p.m. Una Sera Italiana. Enjoy an evening with an Italian flair at the Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens. Italian culture and customs will be the focus of lectures presented by the Italian Scholarship League. Call (330) 702-3000 to register by May 7.
May 11-13 and 18-20: 6-8 p.m. Adult Learn to Golf. Learn fundamentals of grip, setup, putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play and full swing at this beginners' program conducted by PGA professionals. May 12 and 14, 19 and 21: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ladies Golf Clinic. Instruction program conducted by PGA professionals for the advanced and novice golfer. All fundamentals will be reviewed. May 13: 6-8:30 p.m. Growing Everlastings and Herbs. Ida and Ed Krcelic will conduct a workshop that covers selecting, planting, harvesting and drying everlasting flowers and herbs. Take home informative handouts and eight different everlasting plants for your garden. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $20 residents, $26 nonresidents.
May 15 and 16: Garden Forum Flower Show. Presented by Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown. Show schedules are available the month before the show. Entries must be received May 15 by 10:30 a.m.; judging follows immediately. The show opens to the public May 15 from noon to 5 p.m. and May 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is encouraged to enter flower shows.
May 20: Mock Rose Show. 6:30-7:30 p.m. Presented by the Mahoning Valley Rose Society and Fellows Riverside Gardens, this program will interest rose enthusiasts who are planning to enter flower shows. Gain confidence and expertise as you experience the process of entering a horticultural show. Call FRG to register. Fee: $5 residents, $7 nonresidents.
May 21: 8:30 to 10 a.m. Breakfast Botany: The Olive Family. Start your morning with a brisk walk in the gardens to admire the plants belonging to the olive family, such as blooming forsythia and the fringe tree. Return to the Garden Caf & eacute; to learn more while enjoying a light breakfast. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $6 residents, $8 nonresidents.
May 25 or 26: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Culinary Garden: Back to the Grill. David Armstrong will share tantalizing recipes and tips for grilling steaks, seafood, vegetables and salads. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $32 ($25 FFRG members).
May 28-July 4: Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio at the Weller Gallery. Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Original drawings by three Ohio artists from the book "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio" illustrates these exquisite iridescent insects. This exhibit is on loan from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
May 30: noon, Junior Match Play Qualifier. Area junior golfers will compete in 18-hole stroke play to qualify for season-long match play tournament. All participants will qualify. Anyone entering high school in fall or who has not yet completed his or her first year of college is eligible to participate. Fee: $20; includes lunch.
