Hubbard marches on for 3-1 win

MASSILLON --Junior Amanda Taylor pitched a one-hitter as the Hubbard High softball team defeated Canton McKinley, 3-1, in its opening game of the Tigertown Invitational.
Friday's victory was the third straight for Hubbard (7-1), whose only loss has been against Newton Falls.
The Eagles have two more games remaining in the invitational, including this morning's game against Massillon at Genshaft Park.
Hubbard took a 2-0 lead in the first inning following an RBI triple by senior Kelly Hudy and Taylor's hit to plate Hudy. Taylor, a junior, had three strikeouts.
McKinley (7-4) scored on a walk and an error.
Lakeview 3, Girard 2
CORTLAND -- Sophomore Lindsay Whetzel (3-3) scattered five hits, with five strikeouts, to pick up the win in the Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Behind 2-0, the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-3) scored three runs in the fourth inning.
Jen Baker reached base on an error. Brittney Bucco singled, putting runners on first and third. Two wild pitches scored Baker, with Bucco to third. Whetzel walked and stole second. Amy Downs walked to load the bases.
Bucco was put out at home on a groundball. Kate Barnett singled home Whetzel and Downs.
Losing pitcher Nicole Melfi hit a pair of singles for the Indians (2-10, 0-6).
Liberty 8, Grand Valley 3
KINSMAN -- The Leopards (2-8) scored five runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth in the first round of the Badger Invitational.
Jeanette Rivera (2-7) pitched a complete game for the win.
Ashley Gore hit a double, single, drove in two runs and scored once for the Leopards. Traci Brkich and Kelli Pozutto each had two RBIs, while Sarah Stofko hit a double and scored twice.
West Branch 3, Carrollton 2
BELOIT -- After Carrollton scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning, West Branch answered with two in the bottom half of the inning to prevail.
Bri Benedict went 3-for-4, with Vana Morgan hitting a double and single and driving in all three runs. Ellie Geiger had two singles.
Amber Lowe collected a pair of singles for Carrollton.
