Biblical sites visited
Parade magazine in Sunday's Vindicator will visit the putative site of the Garden of Eden in Iraq. For 35 years, the garden and other biblical sites in what is called the "Cradle of Civilization" have been closed to Westerners. Bruce Feiler, a contributing editor for the magazine, visited the sites for the first time and reflects on their significance.
Humorist to perform
LOWELLVILLE -- Mary Faktor, a humorist and motivational speaker from Cleveland, will present her one-woman show "Six Ages of Woman" May 8 at Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, 131 E. Wood St. The show follows a woman from her teens to retirement. The "Night of Laughter" event sponsored by the parish's family life committee begins with a social hour at 7 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres, pop and coffee. Counseling conference set
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS -- The Biblical Counseling Institute will have its 15th annual conference at 8 a.m. May 8 at Cornerstone Community Church, 1400 Lander Road, Mayfield Heights. Friendship Day event
AUSTINTOWN -- Church Women United's May Friendship Day Celebration will be May 7 at Grace Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road. The theme is "In Faith Women Shape the Future Through Friendship." Registration is at 9:30 a.m., and lunch is at noon. Register by Friday. Call (330) 759-7129.
Fund-raising dinner
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 280 Mill Creek Drive, will have a spaghetti dinner from 4-7 p.m. today to raise funds for its Emmaus House Youth Center and its preschool, Building Blocks Learning Center. The dinner is $6.50 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-10, and free for children under age 3. Takeout orders are available.
Day of Prayer events
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several activities will occur locally in connection with the National Day of Prayer on May 6.
UThere will be a community "Concert of Prayer" at 7 p.m. May 6 at Free Methodist Community Church, 9900 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, New Middletown.
UCampbell's Ecumenical Council of Churches will observe the day at 11 a.m. May 8 in the community center in Roosevelt Park.
UThe Single Adult Ministry will meet at Federal Plaza in Youngstown at 11 a.m. May 6 for the observance. Call (330) 746-6034.
UThe Bible Factory Outlet store at Prime Outlets at Grove City, Suite 1110, Grove City, Pa., will distribute free copies of "The Power of a Praying Nation" by Stormie Omartian from April 30 through May 6.
