NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- John Morganelli, one of three people seeking the Democratic nomination for Pennsylvania attorney general, was scheduled to visit Lawrence County today. Morganelli is the district attorney of Northampton County. Lawrence County District Attorney Matthew Mangino was scheduled to have a news conference with Morganelli this afternoon. Mangino had sought the nomination, but he dropped out of the race earlier this year citing a lack of funding.
Suicide prevention
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Suicide Prevention Coalition is presenting a training session from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to raise awareness among area clergy of suicide-prevention strategies. The session at the Counseling Center of Columbiana County is free to area clergy and their staffs and includes lunch. Presenters will be representatives from Help Hotline and the Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. The Counseling Center is at 40722 state Route 154. Meeting rescheduled
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Union Township supervisors will have their next regular meeting May 11. The meeting is normally held the third Tuesday, or May 18. But scheduling conflicts made it necessary to move the meeting to the second Tuesday, Supervisor Steve Galizia said. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building on Municipal Drive.
Crime watch meeting
NORTH LIMA -- The next Beaver Township Police Crime Watch meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Shepherd of the Valley's Activity Center, 9111 Sharrott Road. Representatives from AAA Ohio Motorist Association will speak on travel, and provide safety tips on arranging your trip, making sure you're safe to and from your trip, as well as tips to help you stay safe on your trip. Local crime statistics also will be discussed.
Developmental screeningsfor young children
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lifesteps and Lawrence County Mental Health/Mental Retardation are offering free developmental screenings for all children from birth to 2 years 9 months of age. The screenings will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Cascade Park here. The screenings will look at the child's sight, hearing, speech, movement, playing and thinking skills. The visit will take about 25 minutes and results are discussed immediately. Parents are urged to have their infant or toddler screened so that any developmental problems can be detected at the earliest stage. Appointments are necessary. Bike Safety Day set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Austintown Junior Women's League will have a "Walk or Roll" Saturday for Easter Seals as part of its promotion of Bike Safety Day. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. at the Kirk Road Trailhead at Mill Creek Park. The first 50 participants to donate $20 in pledges to Easter Seals will receive T-shirts. All proceeds will benefit Easter Seals and the services it provides to adults and children with disabilities and special needs in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Austintown Cycle will conduct free bike safety checks. All participants will be eligible to win one of three bikes that will be raffled.
A switch in uniforms
POLAND -- Township road department employees will be switching to safer uniforms. Trustees approved switching the uniforms from a nylon/polyester fabric to a flame-resistant fabric. The cost of the uniforms, which will still be rented from Cintas of Austintown, will go from about $6 a month for each employee to about $9 a month for each employee. Seven employees will use the uniforms.
Leading House in prayer
WASHINGTON -- The Rev. Ron Nuzzi, a Niles native and a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, will lead the House of Representatives in prayer at 10 a.m. Thursday, said U.S. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th. Father Nuzzi, a longtime friend of Ryan's, is serving as the director of Catholic leadership programs in the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame.
