Early school dismissal
YOUNGSTOWN -- All schools in the city district will be dismissed one half-hour earlier than usual Monday because of professional meetings.
Free haircuts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Project Daymaker, a 34-foot Winnebago outfitted with hair salon stylists, will be at Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Blvd., on Wednesday to offer free services to people who could not otherwise afford to have a professional haircut. Daymaker is staffed by volunteer licensed stylists from Casal's de Spa & amp; Salon of Canfield from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Temporary closings
GIRARD -- Pittsburgh Street, which closed today, will remain closed for about two weeks because of the U.S. Route 422 widening project.
About 150 feet of Center Street at 422 will remain closed for another week, while 150 feet of Avon Street will remain closed a week.
Beer theft thwarted
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police said they saw William H. Murray, 20, of Euclid Boulevard steal two cases of beer from a delivery truck parked at Teenie's Tavern on South Avenue on Monday.
Police said they saw Murray jump out of the back seat of a car, run into the tavern parking lot, lift the bay door on the truck and take the beer. Murray, when he saw police, dropped the two cases of beer and surrendered, reports show. A waiting car sped off.
Murray was arrested on a theft charge.
Deliveryman robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- An employee of Main Moon restaurant on Belmont Avenue was robbed at gunpoint of money and Chinese food on North Truesdale Avenue Monday night, reports show.
The employee said two men approached his car and demanded money at 8:55 p.m. The victim turned over $70 and $20 worth of food that he intended to deliver.
When he tried to flee, a shot was fired into his car through the left passenger window and grazed the back of his neck as it came out the passenger seat, police said.
St. Rose Apple Festival
GIRARD -- The first St. Rose Church Apple Festival will be from 1 to 10 p.m. Oct. 11 on the church grounds, 48 E. Main St.
Festivities will include games for all ages and music, with cornstalks and pumpkins for sale.
Apple Festival dinners of barbecued chicken, french fries and apple sauce will be available. Dinners, which range in price from $5 to $12, depending on the portions, should be preordered by filling out forms available at the church rectory or St. Rose School. The meals are to be paid for in advance by check.
Police officer testing
WARREN -- The city human resources department says 130 people have signed up to take a civil service test to become police officers.
The city expects to hire between three and 10 officers within the next two years, and the current civil service list has been exhausted. The department has 78 officers.
The test, which consists of written and physical agility sections, is set for 9 a.m. Saturday in the Warren G. Harding High School cafeteria.
Entertainment books
CHAMPION -- Champion Rotary Club is selling 2004 entertainment books. This year's book includes discounts at businesses throughout Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
The book is available through Nov. 14 for $20.
Books bought from Champion Rotary provide funds used for community services.
