No explosives in grenade
YOUNGSTOWN -- A grenade found Friday morning at a vacant house in the 3700 block of Market Street lacked explosives, police said. Firefighters and members of the Youngstown Police Department bomb squad were called to the scene after a crew cleaning the empty house found the device encased in a black canister. The bomb squad determined the grenade was not explosive.
Elderly woman hit by thug
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 89-year-old woman walking up the steps at St. Dominic Church on East Lucius Avenue at 7:30 a.m. Saturday was slammed into a wall by a man who demanded money, reports show. The elderly victim told police that the man grabbed her coat and pushed her into the wall when she explained that she was carrying no money. The Marmion Avenue woman suffered a cut and lumps on her head. The suspect fled in an unknown direction.
Missing man located
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man missing from an Austintown home since Monday was discovered around 9:49 a.m. Saturday on the West Side of Youngstown, Austintown police said. Further details were not available. Robert W. Sesser, 60, of North Meridian Road, disappeared after telling a neighbor that two women, who may have had car trouble, had flagged him down on Meridian Road.
Learning about grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reservations are being taken for a Grant Center orientation program scheduled for the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1. "Grant Seeking Basics: An Orientation to the Funding Research Process" is a basic orientation to the Grant Center collection.
The orientation is free and open to representatives from nonprofit organizations seeking information on funding sources and fund raising. Grant information applies to nonprofit organization only, no information is available for individuals seeking funds.
Reservations can be placed by calling the main library, (330) 744-8636, and pressing "2" at the phone prompt for "reference information."
Brother sought in stabbing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are looking for a 31-year-old city man accused of stabbing his brother. According to police reports, the man went to his brother's Ohio Avenue home and started an argument over a car. The man went into his brother's kitchen and got a knife, then pulled a gun and threatened to shoot his brother before stabbing him once in each arm. Reports say the man fled in a gray Ford Taurus, which was later found on the North Side.
