Hubbard pupils to get rewards for good deeds

Friday, October 31, 2003

HUBBARD -- Children in kindergarten through second grade at Roosevelt Elementary School will get Eagle Bucks instead of pats on the back for good behavior starting this week.
The announcement to implement Eagles Landing, a new reward system for good behavior at Roosevelt, was made at the Hubbard school board meeting Tuesday.
Superintendent James Herrholtz said children who do good deeds, such as picking up a piece of paper or holding a door open for someone, will be given Eagle Bucks that can be used as money at participating local businesses, including Pizza Works and Staples.
The system, which was developed by teacher Ray Soloman, is reliant on contributions from local businesses, he said.
A similar system, however, which Herrholtz said will be implemented some time this year at Reed Middle School, is the result of a $10,000 federal grant.
He said that he has not yet decided on what rewards will be given to middle-school children, but like Eagles Landing, the system will reward pupils for doing good deeds.
