NEWTON FALLS -- Matt Gillespie scored a 14-yard touchdown in overtime Friday as the Newton Falls High football team defeated Lakeview, 21-14.
Gillespie rushed 21 times for 124 yards for the Tigers (5-4, 4-2 Trumbull Athletic Conference). His 22-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter knotted the game at 14.
Justin Rush returned the second half kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown that gave the Bulldogs (5-4, 3-3) a 14-0 lead.
Matt Nero led Lakeview with 24 carries for 102 yards.
Liberty 25, Brookfield 14
BROOKFIELD -- Marcellus Bowman scored Liberty's first two touchdowns to start the Leopards on the way to victory.
Bowman returned a pass interception 20 yards to his first TD, then caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Brian Jones to help the Leopards (7-2, 5-1) take 13-0 halftime lead.
That strong start proved to be the difference as both teams scored twice in the second half.
With Liberty holding a 19-14 lead in the last quarter, the Leopards sealed the verdict on Donovan Fletcher's 47-yard TD dash.
Fletcher rushed for 79 yards in 14 attempts, while Mike Marvine added 57 yards, including a 2-yard TD plunge, to aid Liberty. Brian Jones 4-for-8 passing for 40 yards.
For Brookfield (5-6, 3-5), Chris Sharba rushed for 115 yards in 22 carries, including a 45-yard scoring scamper. And Dan Davies scored on a 1-yard plunge, and was 3-for-12 passing for 25 yards.
