VETERANS
STRUTHERS -- The Tri-State Marine Corps League Detachment will conduct a memorial service at 3 p.m. next Sunday at the Ohio Beirut Monument in Hopewell Park, state Route 616. The service will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of 241 servicemen killed in the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983. Cpl. Edward Johnston of Struthers and Cpl. Stanley Slinski of Niles and two other Ohio Marines were among those killed. Detachment Commandant Harry Dampf and other members will conduct the service. All veterans organizations and the general public are invited to attend.

Air Force: Airman Warren G. Biles, honor graduate (New Wilmington, Pa., Area High School, '02), a son of Robert Biles of Pulaski, Pa., and Antoinette Paytas of Harmony, Pa.; Airman Jason N. Bryan (Sebring McKinley High School, '98), a son of Patricia Bryan of Sebring.
Army: Pfc. Richard C. Boyles (Champion High School, '03), a son of Cynthia and stepson of Jeffrey Hockenberry of Champion; Pvt. Jeffrey T. Parker (Lincoln High School, Ellwood City, Pa., '03), a son of Larry D. and Diane Parker of Ellwood City.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Basic combat course
Marine Corps Pfc. Adam L. Bates, a son of Larry L. Bates of Williamsfield, graduated from the five-week Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Bates joined the Marine Corps in February 2003.
Nuclear Power School
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Adam D. Bell, a son of Bea Ann Kudla of Glassport, Pa., and Lonnie E. Bell of East Palestine, graduated from the Navy's six-month Nuclear Power School, Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Goose Creek, S.C. Bell is a 2002 graduate of East Palestine High School and joined the Navy in May 2002.
PROMOTIONS
Air Force captain
Cheryl L. Hetherington, recently promoted to captain in the Air Force, is enrolled at the Air Force Institute of Technology program, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, to study for a master's degree in operations research.
Hetherington, an executive officer, is a daughter of John T. and Carol A. McClellan of Farmdale, and daughter-in-law of James E. and Carol L. Hetherington of Hiram. Capt. Hetherington graduated in 1990 from Maplewood High School, Johnston, and earned a bachelor's degree in 1994 from Youngstown State University.
DEPLOYED
Back from the Pacific
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin T. Fincham, a son of Jo Ellen Fincham of Youngstown, and Jack Fincham of Columbiana, has returned from an eight-month deployment to the western Pacific in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and international naval exercises including Foal Eagle, Tandem Thrust and Ulchi Focus Lens, while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. Fincham is a 1997 graduate of Chaney High School, Youngstown.
Operation Sheltering Sky
Air Force Staff Sgt. John J. Kimpan is in Sierra Leone, West Africa, as part of Operation Sheltering Sky, which does recovery and emergency evacuation operations in the western African nation. Kimpan is a Pavehawk helicopter maintenance crew chief assigned to the 85th Maintenance Squadron at the Keflavik Naval Air Station, Iceland. He is a son of Sandy L. Kimpan of Sharpsville, Pa., and a 1996 graduate of Sharpsville Area High School.
Stationed in Germany
Army 1st Lt. Rebecca A. Jarabek is stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. Jarabek, a forward support team leader/medical evacuation pilot, is assigned to the 236th Medical Company. Jarabek, a daughter of Myrlynn and Joseph Jarabek of Youngstown, is a 1996 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown, and a 2000 graduate of U.S. Military Academy.
Member of security forces
Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Rob S. Van Brocklin, stationed at Ash Shuaybah Port, Kuwait, is a member of Coastal Warfare Security Forces there. Van Brocklin, a 1991 graduate of Poland High School, is a security boat driver and also operates the craft's .50-caliber machine gun. Van Brocklin, a 1996 graduate of Kent State University with a degree in criminal justice, is a son of Harry and Jeanette Van Brocklin of Poland.
