Prison sentence given in forged-check case

Thursday, November 27, 2003

YOUNGSTOWN -- Yolanda Ivy, 31, of West Marion Avenue, was sentenced to one year in prison Monday for trying to cash a forged check.
Ivy pleaded guilty in October to one count of forgery, for which she was indicted June 12. Authorities said she was one of several women who took part in a counterfeit-check ring, using home computers to print out bogus checks which were made out to look like corporate checks from local companies.
Assistant prosecutor Jeffrey Limbian said Ivy tried to cash a bogus check for $825.69 at a gasoline station Dec. 9, 2002.
Ivy's lawyer, Walter D. Ritchie, asked for probation, but Judge Maureen A. Cronin opted for prison because Ivy has several past convictions for similar violations.
