Three namedto All-OAC soccer
TWINSBURG -- Three Youngstown-area players have been named to the Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer team.
Cheryl Davies, a senior midfielder for Muskingum College, and Laura Bandy, a sophomore forward for Mount Union -- both from West Branch High -- were selected to the second team.
Cara Russo, a junior midfielder for Mount Union from Warren JFK, was named honorable mention.
Bandy ranked second on the Mount Union team in scoring with six goals and 15 points overall, while Russo had six points.
Mount Union (8-9-2, 5-3-1 OAC) had five All-OAC selections overall, including junior defender Owen Crosland, who made the first team.
Sophomore midfielder Amber Knoll was picked to the second team, while senior forward Jessica Gordon earned honorable mention.
Scott Langone of Mt. Union was named OAC co-coach of the year.
All-PAC soccer
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College senior Sharon Griffin, a Canfield High graduate, has been selected to the first team of the President's Athletic Conference women's soccer team.
Thiel College junior Katie Mound (Southeast) was also a first-team choice.
Westminster senior Michelle Chovan ( Hubbard) was a second-team selection as was teammate junior Angie DePascale (Howland).
Making the honorable list was Washington & amp; Jefferson sophomore Jamie Rigney (Hubbard).
Phantoms losein shootout
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Youngstown Phantoms Junior-A hockey club dropped a 2-1 decision to the Springfield Junior Blues in an overtime shootout Saturday.
The score was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and after neither team scored during the five-minute overtime period, the game went to a shootout. Youngstown misfired on all five of its attempts against Springfield goaltender Ian Harper during the shootout. Phantoms' goaltender Tyler Sims stopped the first four shots he faced before Alex Semenov of the Junior Blues beat him and won the game.
The Phantoms scored first, getting a power-play goal from Tommy Kolar at the 8:38 mark of the third period. Springfield tied the score on a power-play goal by Hank Carisio at 16:29.
The Phantoms (9-7-5), winless in their last five games, received one point in the standings for the regulation tie. Springfield (16-2-1) also won Friday's series opener, 2-0, as Youngstown was shut out for the first time.
Youngstown plays host to Toledo Friday and Cleveland Saturday at The Ice Zone. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.
Two Titans namedfor academics
STAMFORD, Conn. -- Jim Chaney and Justin Napotnik, seniors on the Westminster College football team, have been recognized for their academic achievements.
Chaney, a senior offensive tackle from Hubbard High, and Napotnik, a senior running back from Sharpsville, were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division District II football team.
Chaney, who has a 3.842 grade-point average as a history major, made the first-team offense.
Napotnik, who has a 4.0 GPA as a major in biology and pre-medicine, made the second team offense.
Ramun loses in debut
CLEVELAND -- Saturday night at St. Michael's Hall, Poland's Dan Ramun made his amateur boxing debut, losing a four-round junior welterweight decision to Jermale Hughes of Cleveland.
Ramun, 17, a senior at Poland High, had a 17-0 record and championships in the KO Drugs High School Boxing Tournament.
Ramun is trained by John Hobart at the Buckeye Elks Gym.
Ramun easily won the first round coming at Hughes with a barrage of rights and left hooks to the head and body.
The fight evened out in the second round and with Ramun tiring in the final rounds the decision went to Hughes.
Ramun will return to the ring Friday night in a club show in Cuyahoga Falls.

Akron's Owens out
AKRON -- Lee Owens is out as football coach at Akron after nine years Sunday following a 7-5 season.
He was reassigned and will assist the university in fund raising, public relations and student recruitment, the school said.
Owens had a 40-61 record with the Zips, including 31-41 in the Mid-American Conference. They were 5-3 this season in the MAC, including a 35-28 victory over Ohio on Saturday.

Hockey trade
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks traded goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to the Calgary Flames on Sunday afternoon for a second-round draft pick in 2005.
Kiprusoff could play immediately with the Flames, who don't have a proven backup goalie behind Jamie McLennan and injured starter Roman Turek.
UIC loses, Ohio winsin BCA games
CINCINNATI -- Mike Helms scored 27 points and Oakland recovered from a first-half lapse to beat Illinois-Chicago 79-66 Sunday in the semifinals of the Black Coaches Association Classic.
Helms scored 21 in the second half, leading Oakland (2-0) to the championship game in the eight-team tournament played on Xavier's home court.
Armond Williams scored 23 points for Illinois-Chicago (1-1).
Jaivon Harris (Alliance) scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Ohio to a 51-47 win over Coppin State in a consolation game.
