Police: Man kills himself by jumping from 12th floor

Saturday, May 31, 2003

YOUNGSTOWN -- A man committed suicide today when he jumped out of a window on the 12th floor of the First National Bank building and landed on the roof of the former McCrory's building, police said.
The man wasn't identified as of this morning, but police said he was white and between the ages of 40 and 60.
Police Capt. Mike Vodilko said officers think the man took the elevator to the 12th floor, opened a "really heavy" window in the stairwell, jumped and fell about nine stories, landing on beams and pipes on top of the building next door, then fell about 3 more feet onto the roof around 8:45 a.m.
"Workers [at the former McCrory's building] heard a thud on the roof and that alerted them that something was wrong," Vodilko said.
The workers discovered the man and called police.
The First National Bank, the former Metropolitan Savings Bank, is one of the Mahoning Valley's tallest buildings, with 17 stories. The McCrory's building is three stories tall.
