Chargerssign Mays
SAN DIEGO -- Former Youngstown State University tailback P.J. Mays has signed a two-year free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers.
Mays, a second-team all-American in 2002, finished his three-year career at YSU with 3,511 yards rushing and 45 touchdowns, the most in Gateway Conference history.
Last fall, Mays rushed for 1,284 yards and earned first-team all-conference honors. He finished sixth in Division I-AA, averaging 116.7 yards per game.
As a junior, Mays rushed for 1,446 yards and set the school record for yards per game (131.5).
A graduate of East High, he joined YSU in 2000 after leaving the University of Cincinnati.
Humphreyjoins Penguins
YOUNGSTOWN -- Quin Humphrey of Stockbridge High in Atlanta has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at Youngstown State for John Robic.
The 6-2 guard averaged 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, five assists and 2.5 rebounds as a senior. This past season, Humphrey led Stockbridge to its first playoff appearance since 1993. Prep Stars Magazine tabbed Humphrey as the No. 8 senior in the state while he earned third-team All-Georgia honors.
Humphrey becomes the second player from the Atlanta area to sign with the Penguins. In November, YSU inked point guard Michael Woodard of Fairburn, Ga.
Joining the pair are: Craig Anderson (Mt. Prospect, Ill.); John Barber (Renaissance High, Detroit) and Dwight Holmes (Reynoldsburg, O.). They are forwards.
St. Bonaventurehires Gee
OLEAN, N.Y. -- Jayson Gee, a former Youngstown State University men's assistant basketball coach, has joined the St. Bonaventure staff as an assistant, the Associated Press reported today.
Gee was a former assistant under head coach John Stroia.
JFK seniorshonored
WARREN -- Warren JFK High seniors Becky Bertuzzi and Chris Totten have received Academic All America awards from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.
Bertuzzi has a 3.98 grade-point average and qualified for state her senior year. She will attend Youngstown State to study public relations and swim for the Penguins.
Totten has a 3.94 grade-point average and qualified for district last winter. He will attend Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he will major in architecture and swim for the Cardinals.
Scrappers setsinging auditions
NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers will hold a National Anthem tryout Thursday at Cafaro Field.

Aeros win
AKRON -- Luis Gonzalez and Ron Wright homered and Jose Vargas and Rafael Betancourt combined for four scoreless innings of relief as the Akron Aeros beat the Binghamton Mets 5-4 Tuesday in the Eastern League.
Gonzalez's third homer of the season came in the third inning and Wright's second of the season was in the fifth.
The Aeros also scored on Tyler Minges' RBI single in the second and Brian Luderer's RBI double in the fourth.
Francisco Cruceta (2-3) gave up four runs on 10 hits in five innings. Vargas went three innings and Betancourt pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
The Mets scored on Craig Brazell's two-run single in the first and in the fourth on Anthony Calabrese's single and a groundout by Gilbert Velazquez.
Jeromy Burnitz, on a rehab assignment from the New York Mets with a broken bone in his left hand, singled twice.

Anthony signswith Nike
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Carmelo Anthony, the freshman who led Syracuse to the national championship in April, has signed a shoe and apparel deal with Nike.
Anthony is projected to be one of the first three players selected in the June 26 NBA draft.
