Liberty church donates food to families in postwar Iraq

Thursday, May 22, 2003

Dr. Bruce Smith, at left, loads a carton of groceries into the back of a van at Northside Baptist Church in Liberty. The boxes, which will each feed a family of five for about a month, will be shipped to families in Iraq whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by the war. The Rev. Brian Picard, above right, and his wife, Nawal, helped to collect 800 pounds of grocery staples -- rice, beans, tea, dry milk, flour, sugar and salt -- for the cause. Mrs. Picard grew up in Baghdad and moved to the United States in 1982. She lost more than 20 relatives in the war. Paraphrasing Bible stories, she said deliverance always comes at a price; no one died in vain.
